Description
San Diego State and SMU would not be earning a full share of the media rights deal if they end up joining the Pac-12, which is normal given the lack of major TV appeal of G5 schools. To earn their place, they have to foster programs that are desriable on TV to people outside of just their own fans and those of their opponents.
On today's episode of Locked On Pac-12, Spencer McLaughlin examines how likely it is that those two schools could one day play in major, must-see games in the Pac-12. Rivalries are valuable commodoties for a conference's TV ratings, but they can't be formulated out of thin air.
A recent report showcased how much revenue the top athletic departments in the country generated in fiscal year 2022, and the Pac-12 had just two teams in the top 25 nationally. The list showcases why money is important, but is not everything when thinking about success in college football.
