(5/9/23) Futures are flat in anticipation of Wednesday's (5/10) inflation report: The big concern is whether inflation is remaining sticky, and if inflation is running hotter-than-expected, the narrative at the Fed could potentially change. Most Fed observers are expecting that the last rate hike was The Last Rate Hike for now, but if core inflation remains stubbornly elevated, that could mean the Fed is not yet through raising interest rates. Meanwhile, earnings season has been better-than-expected, but concerns still exist over lower economic growth later this year. Tighter bank lending standards are also a concern, seen as a defacto rate hike on the economy, as well. Tomorrow's CPI report, then, could be the next driver for the Fed.
