(5/1/23) 64% of the S&P 500 have reported earnings, chalking up better-than-expected results (on lowered expectations; shocker), lifting markets heading into the weekend. The MACD buy-signal has turned up, but futures this morning are flat ahead of the open. Weekend news of First Republic Bank's failure and absorption by JP Morgan is keeping credit stress at a minimum. The Federal Reserve is expected to hike rates again this week, but the bigger news-driver will be what the FOMC says about future rate hikes and their outlook on the economy. Persistent, sticky inflation is not likely to allow the Fed to go dovish on rates. The idea of a Fed Pivot is being pushed out later in the year as economic data remains strong.
