Description

Two things can be true at the same time. The San Francisco Giants' offseason has been absolutely brutal—from an emotional perspective. At the same time, the Giants have made several solid moves that add up to a reasonably productive offseason to date. The one thing they haven't landed yet is star talent, after Carlos Correa's 13-year megadeal fell through last week over legitimate medical concerns related to his right ankle.
The SF Giants started things off by bringing back Joc Pederson on a one-year, $19.7 million qualifying offer. Pederson was the Giants' most dangerous bat in 2022, and bringing him back is certainly better than letting him walk. He was a problem on defense last year, however, which is why the San Francisco Giants' signings of Mitch Haniger and Michael Conforto are so notable. The Giants didn't have any outfielders depart in free agency, so Haniger and Conforto simply push some of last year's outfield contributors out of a lot of playing time. The two additions figure to be near-everyday players for the Giants in 2022, and they allow Pederson to shift to near-full-time DH duties against right-handed pitching.
On the pitching side, the Giants once again let an ace walk. Carlos Rodón was dominant for the Giants in 2022, but now he plays for another team. The SF Giants instead signed Sean Manaea and Ross Stripling to identical two-year, $25 million deals with opt outs after the first year. The Giants' rotation doesn't figure to have as much upside, but it is deeper. It's a solid collection of arms that could once again make the rotation a strength. Kyle Harrison figures to factor into the MLB team next year as well, and he could provide that upside. The Giants also signed Tyler Rogers' twin brother, Taylor Rogers, to a three-year, $33 million deal. There's still work to do, but so far the Giants should have a passing grade this offseason. It's not their fault Correa's physical turned up something unexpected, and that only happened a week ago. They deserve more time to pivot to alternative options. Correa himself is still unsigned and could possibly end up back with the Giants on a restructured deal.
