Description
Read along to practice your English and to learn the English phrases TO KICK BUTT and TO KICK ONESELFIn this English lesson I wanted to help you learn the English phrase, to kick butt. Now, I think you all know what kicking is. It's something you do with your foot, and your butt is below your back. That's probably the best and nicest way to describe it. But the phrase to kick butt, doesn't actually refer to going and kicking people in the butt, it refers to winning. We use this a lot to talk about sports teams. We'll say that, you know, I'm going to watch my favorite team play today. I hope that they will kick butt, basically you don't mean they're gonna go on the field, and kick the other players in the butt, what you mean is that they're going to play the game. They're gonna play really, really well. And they're gonna win by a lot of points. So, if you were to say, I hope that they will kick butt, it means that you hope they will win. And if you were to say, my team really kicked butt yesterday, it means that they played hard and they won the game by a lot of points.WANT FREE ENGLISH LESSONS? Sometimes I kick myself when I make a mistake, sometimes you think about something, like maybe pizza was on sale last week. It was a two for one special, and I didn't buy it. I could say, oh, I just keep kicking myself, because I should've bought that pizza, it was such a good deal. Maybe you're making a video and you say something wrong. And then when you get in the house and you start to edit the video, you see that you made a bunch of mistakes. I'd say, oh, I just keep, just kicking myself, because I made the video and I made a bunch of mistakes. By the way, there's no mistakes in this video, just so you know. But anyways, when you kick yourself, or to kick oneself means that you did something wrong and you're just kind of annoyed with yourself that you did it.Anyways to review, to kick butt does not mean to actually go out and kick someone in the butt. It means that you are maybe on a sports team and you win by a lot or any other thing that you can win, you can say that you kicked butt. And to kick oneself, to kick oneself is simply to describe a situation where you did something where it could've went better, and you kind of regret that it didn't. And so you're kind of kicking yourself about it.Hey, let's look at a comment from a previous video. Once again, if you're wondering why I keep stopping while I'm talking it's because my ears are getting cold. I don't know why I didn't wear a hat. I never dress for the weather when I come out to do these videos.Anyways, this comment is from Adam, and Adam says, Bob, you seem to be getting a kick out of winter. And my response was this, I do get a kick out of it. It's so beautiful to see the whole world covered in a layer of snow, I love it. It's very pleasing to my eye.So as you can see, yes, I am enjoying myself out here, even though my ears are really cold, I'll be done in a minute, so I'll be fine. But Adam, thanks for that comment. Yes, it's just beautiful. I love seeing all of the snow everywhere. Let me give you another better view. Like when you look around right now, it's just beautiful. I don't think I would really enjoy living in a country that didn't have winter, as much as I'm complaining about my ears.Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/bobthecanadian)
