When the internet was born in 1969, attention was focused on data networking. In 1980 Tim Berners-Lee created the World Wide Web, linking hypertext documents into an information system. This first stage of the internet, from 1969-2003, was the birth of what the internet would soon become. In August 2003, Myspace was launched from Beverly Hills, CA. Myspace marked the transition from the Internet of Hyperlinks to the Social Internet. From 2003-2016 the world saw its attention shift towards platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, LinkedIn, Instagram, Vine, and TikTok. This is the internet we are focused on in Understanding the Power of Social Media.
