Description

Scott talks with Marvin Scott Jared, the creator of NYLON Magazine and Ray Gun Magazine. They discuss Marvin’s new book, Ray Gun: The Bible of Music and Style, about his radical 1990’s publication. They speak about Marvin’s upbringing in Jacksonville, Florida, their mutual love of magazines, Marvin’s early musical influences in Lou Reed and Mott the Hoople, Martin’s start in the publishing business, and his early forays in music playing with Johnny Van Zandt. Martin remembers raising money to buy Creem Magazine, and he shares advice on how certain failures allow you to keep pushing into other ventures. Scott and Martin get into David Bowie stories, then chat about art direction, typography, and how Martin shapes the look of his magazines. Martin remembers the inception of NYLON Magazine with Helena Christensen. Lastly, Marvin talks about his own photography and directing, as well as his involvement with Nylon TV and Popular TV.
