Description
We all feel we have a self. Early philosophers posited that the soul was sort of a secularized soul that was real and ultimately would be found in the brain. New age mental health workers also argue that we all have a real self that represents the best in us and which we often ignore when we lie, cheat or otherwise behave according to some false self that we show the world when we are being defensive. Modern philosophers and many scientific experts on brain activity argue that there in no self, free will or ability to choose our behaviors claiming that these are merely illusions that can be safely ignored when trying to understand human behavior. I will present an argument that the self is not physicallyreal but it very much does exist and is necessary for what we are as creative moral human beings.
