Description

A recent report by the UK’s Center for Countering Digital Hate found that anti-vaxx organizations reach 58 million people on social media. The total amount of money spent by anti-vaxx groups and advertisers targeting their followers on Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube is roughly $1 billion. The majority of the money funding the most prominent anti-vaxx groups is by just two men: osteopath Joseph Mercola and fund manager Bernard Selz. All of this makes you wonder: Why is so money being used to target anti-vaxxers? Derek interviews Imran Ahmed, founder of the Center for Countering Digital Hate, about how anti-vaxx leaders and groups are using social media to target and recruit followers. The stakes are higher than ever, as the vaccine argument has transcended autism and is threatening to endanger public health during the pandemic. Julian considers the vaccine fears of parents as well as the shadow of the Tuskegee Syphillis Study, and how anti-vaxx alliances are targeting black communities, which could be a disastrous Trojan Horse for COVID-19, while Matthew serves up his This Week in Conspirituality segment in the epilogue, looking at how the leader of the high-demand group he was indoctrinated into over 20 years ago, led by Michael Roach, is rebooting old content as a COVID-era grift.02:32 The History, Facts, and Fears of Vaccines1:01:48 Interview with Imran Ahmed1:33:40 Disaster SpiritualityAll music by EarthRise SoundSystem (Duke Schommer + Derek Beres)Support Conspirituality on PatreonShow NotesHistory of VaccinesA History of Measles in the United StatesMeasles Cases and OutbreaksMMR Vaccination | What You Should KnowMercury, Vaccines, and Autism: One Controversy, Three HistoriesAluminum in vaccinesHuman papillomavirus (HPV) vaccinesCDC Global Health – Polio – Our ProgressChristiane Northrup: Triangulation, regret, Gardisil, civil disobedienceHow the Public Learned About the Infamous Tuskegee Syphilis StudyAnti-vaccination leaders fuel black mistrust of medical establishment as covid-19 kills people of colorThe Anti-Vaxx Industry: How Big Tech powers and profits from vaccine misinformationMichael Roach pitching “meditations designed to plant seeds to eradicate the virus”Registration page for Roach’s programSex and Death on the Road t

A weekly study of converging right-wing conspiracy theories and faux-progressive wellness utopianism. At best, the conspirituality movement attacks public health efforts in times of crisis. At worst, it fronts and recruits for the fever-dream of QAnon. As the alt-right and New Age horseshoe toward each other in a blur of disinformation, clear discourse and good intentions get smothered. Charismatic influencers exploit their followers by co-opting conspiracy theories on a spectrum of intensity ranging from vaccines to child trafficking. In the process, spiritual beliefs that have nurtured creativity and meaning are transforming into memes of a quickly-globalizing paranoia. Conspirituality Podcast attempts to bring understanding to this landscape. A journalist, a cult researcher, and a philosophical skeptic discuss the stories, cognitive dissonances, and cultic dynamics tearing through the yoga, wellness, and new spirituality worlds. Mainstream outlets have noticed the problem. We crowd-source, research, analyze, and dream answers to it.
