Description

In today's episode of the As Told by Nomads Podcast, join me and Kym Ali as we talk about how she turned her pain into power as a black woman who experienced discrimination and injustice in corporate environments. Here, she discusses why burnout is not normal, generational traumas, unlearning misconceptions about “strength,” and her story on discrimination that women worldwide related to in her co-authored book, Everyday Struggle: How Toxic Workspaces Impact Black Women.“Strong Black Woman”During the exchange, Tayo and Kym talk about the different points on how to unlearn the idea of ‘being strong is keeping it inside.’ This understanding of a strong character is what stereotyping uses when shaping black women and black folks in general. Both Kym and Tayo disagree with this. About Kym Ali:Kym Ali is a Registered Nurse and Founder of Kym Ali Consulting Firm. Kym works closely with corporations and healthcare facilities to emphasize the importance of Workplace Wellness and Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion solutions to prevent and manage employee burnout while increasing employee belonging and engagement. While living overseas, Kym lost her job due to systemic racism and relocated back to the States. Two weeks later, her niece passed away; the stress took a toll on her. Two weeks later, Kym suffered a heart attack in her 30's; Kym knew she had to stop pretending to be strong and seek the support she needed. Kym became a Behavior Change Specialist and Mental Health First Aide Coach to help heal herself. Kym now educates organizations on the repercussions of employee burnout and how exclusion can severely affect an organization's bottom line.Outline of the episode:[03:21]The things that nurses have to face with a ‘suck-it-up’ attitude[05:39] Kym Ali – on being labeled as insubordinate and aggressive [09:03]Facing termination, debts, and a travel ban in a foreign country[12:02]I can’t afford a mental or nervous breakdown![14:57]The power of healing through sharing stories[16:03]On her book Everyday Struggle: How Toxic Workspaces Impact Black Women[25:35] The great resignation is perfect timingResources:Website: https://www.kymali.com/LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/diversityandwellness/Everyday Struggle: How Toxic Workspaces Impact Black Women: https://www.kymali.com/shop-1Connect with Tayo Rockson and the As Told By Nomads Podcast on:Personal Website: https://tayorockson.comUYD Management: https://uydmanagement.com/UYD Collective: https://tayorockson.com/uyd-collectiveLinkedin: https://www.linkedin.com/in/tayorockson Podcast: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcastTwitter: https://twitter.com/TayoRockson See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
