Description

Episode 10 is a conversation between Jason and old school skating / San Diego punk rock legend Andy Newton aka @lord_shanty aka #OMA.
Though the two didn’t know one another in the San Diego punk scene of the early 80’s they were in many of the same rooms, seeing the great hardcore line-ups that were a weekly occurrence in those days.
In that era Jason and his friends were straight edge teens doing their best to see the bands and have a good time without getting beaten by the older, drunker more violent elements of the scene. Andy on the other hand was one of those more mayhem oriented older punks. In this episode we get to hear a take on the ‘Slow Death’ era from the other side of the generation and attitudinal divide.
In addition to music talk, the conversation begins with a discussion of the evolution of skateboarding from clay wheels to the first generation of urethane wheels that allowed an early skater like Andy to leave the sidewalks and enter the empty swimming pools of Southern California.
The talk ends where it begins with Lord Shanty getting back into pool riding in his late 20’s after he received a very brutal dose of karma delivered to him by the new guard of vicious Neo-Nazi skinheads who’d arrived on the scene in the late 80’s.
For man in his 60’s who has survived more head injuries than a crash test dummy, Andy’s memory and his wits are sharp and his sense of humor is very much intact.
Enjoy this Jason’s conversation with this Rock n’ Roll survivor.
