Covey David’s mantra: 100% trust 100% of the time If you want the world to trust you, you have to be trustworthy The concept of reconditioning your reticular activating system (RAS) 100% trust 100% of the time   David operates on the principle of 100% trust 100% of the time. David believes his life flows easily because he isn’t consumed with distrust. It affects his ability to connect when he first meets someone. People have a lot of fear with how they protect their world, which closes them off. Just because you were robbed once doesn’t mean it will happen again. It’s how you respond and adapt that matters. David chooses to avoid carrying paranoia and fear with him.   You don’t have to live in a world of distrust. David feels that feelings of guardedness and distrust attract exactly what you’re trying to protect yourself from. How does David trust 100% of people 100% of the time? David shares a few stories that demonstrate that when you treat people with trust, people become even more trustworthy. What happens when someone breaks your trust?   That doesn’t mean that you can’t listen to your intuition. Some things are necessary. But you don’t want your default mode to be distrustful. You don’t want to walk through the world projecting distrust. If someone breaks David’s trust, he’ll have a conversation with them. David truly believes that when he addresses someone, he’s teaching them how to treat him. He’s showing them that what they did doesn’t work for him and he allows them to start over. If people prove themselves to be untrustworthy in multiple situations, David is certainly more aware of it. If you want the world to trust you, you have to be trustworthy   If you want the world to trust you, you have to be trustworthy. Keep your word. Do what you say you’re going to do. Apologize for your mistakes—and be sincere. Tell the truth—not an adapted truth or an element of truth but the whole truth. When you break trust, clean it up in an authentic way. People will relate to you and understand. Live in a world where your word is your bond.   When we are trustworthy, we teach people to trust us more. David emphasizes that you shouldn’t wait for the world to show you it’s trustworthy before you become trustworthy. David’s personal experience is that people show up as trustworthy when you give them the benefit of the doubt. Recondition your reticular activating system (RAS)   The world is more beautiful with trust. Our ability to share trust attracts and brings so much back because of your capacity to be open. David’s predominant thought pattern is trust. So he’s always seeing reasons to trust more.   Have you come across someone who looks menacing or distrustful? Your reticular activating system (RAS) is likely conditioned to see through the filter of distrust. But you can recondition your RAS to choose to trust and see good.   Perhaps the kid on the street corner in a dark hoodie isn't going to rob someone, but they’re cold. Maybe they just had a fight and are covering up their emotions. Whatever we predominantly think about we see and notice in the world. We see the world as we are.   You can choose to be a more open, kind, loving  and trusting person. To hear all of David’s thoughts on the topic of building trust, listen to this episode of My Extra Mile. Resources & People Mentioned   The Speed
