In 2012, a Florida prisoner died after being locked in a shower for two hours. Darren Rainey, a 50-year-old inmate at the Dade Correctional Institution, was serving a two-year sentence for cocaine possession. Having been diagnosed with schizophrenia, Darren was serving his sentence in Dade's Transitional Care Unit (the official name given for the prison's psych ward). On June 23rd, guards noticed that Darren was suffering from a psychotic break. They escorted him to the showers, where his body was found two hours later.
