The Context of White Supremacy hosts the 5th study session on Gil Scott-Heron's memoir, The Last Holiday. A poet, author, musician and victim of White Supremacy, Scott-Heron died in 2011. He wrote and performed music that explicitly discussed black lives and how the System of White Supremacy devastates black people. Legendary selections like "The Revolution Will Not Be Televised" encourage many to list Scott-Heron as one of the pioneer of hip-hop music. Last week's session explored Gil's leadership of a campus-wide boycott at Lincoln University regarding inadequate health facilities for the students. Gil mobilized black veterans and approximately six hundred HBCU students to forgo classes until the white president and administration vastly improved the school's medical resources. The biography discussed a sizable amount of alcohol and cannabis consumption by Gil and his friends; in fact, alcohol may have contributed to a potentially leathal car crash involving Gil and his friends. In his early 20's, Gil published multiple books and albums, obtained a college degree, and traveled the globe playing music that candidly addressed Racism.
