Key takeaways from our chat with Luiz
1 - FI is happening all over the world!
From this interview we can really see that the FIRE is spreading! Luiz tells us that FI is a pretty big thing in Brazil, and although all the bloggers are anonymous, the movement is gaining awareness. Luiz discovered FI when searching for smart ways to manage his money, and then started applying strategies with the help of Brazilian FI bloggers. He tells us it's too dangerous to reveal your identity online because of the economic and political instability - but he now has a blog and regularly listens to FI podcasts.
2 - Why it's different to reach FI in Brazil vs in the US
The interesting thing about reaching FI in Brazil is that the money game is quite different. First of all, Brazilian banks still have high interest rates, meaning simply putting your money in a bank will give a similar return to the stock market. But things are a bit more expensive in Brazil, and the minimum wage is much lower - just over $1. So in order to reach FI in Brazil, you do need an actual income.
3 - Should you sacrifice some of your health to reach FI?
Luiz tells us he did have to sacrifice some of his health to finally reach his number. As a pilot, he wasn't sleeping well and he could feel his health deteriorating. His original plan was to take a career break, but then he decided to power through in order to reach his number and quit once for all. Was it the right decision? Personally, he says yes, however he agrees that this might not be the right choice for everyone. At the end of the day, it's a very personal decision.
