Social media has forever changed how companies reach their target markets and consumers make buying decisions. According to a study done by Global Web Index, 54% of social media users use social media to research products, and 71% of consumers are more likely to make a purchase based on social media referrals (2022). From influencers who recommend products and services to their following, to consumers who only trust a product after interacting with it and reading in-depth reviews from current users, a business without a social media page might as well not exist at all. DataReport ranks Instagram as the fourth most popular app globally, used by roughly 18.1% of the world's total population (2022). This means that advertisers could potentially reach over 1.4 billion users on Instagram, not counting the number of walk-in customers you receive annually.
The potential to tap into new markets and promote one’s brand on a larger scale is made possible through the app, in a way that can move a business from selling to your neighborhood to selling to any country across the world from the comfort of your home. The massive network that Instagram provides is one that you should aim to tap into as a business owner—to grow and bring awareness to your brand.
Instagram provides a wide array of useful tools for business owners to personalize and manage their business from anywhere they might be. The importance of having a social media page and the numerous opportunities available to you make creating a business page a necessity for a growing business.
Over my career in the past few years, I’ve had the pleasure of building multiple businesses’ social media presence, and Instagram has been one of the biggest factors in running a successful business. In this guide, I'll walk you through seven common determinants of running a successful Instagram business page, starting with how to set up the right profile for your business and using content that will help you gain followers and build a community.
Step 1: Getting Started
Social media has changed the way customers interact with brands and how brands interact with their customers. Brand-to-customer relations are skyrocketing, as brands can have genuine one-on-one conversations and feedback from their customers, of which they use to elevate their brands. Customers are also given the opportunity to feel that their opinions matter regarding their favorite brands and the opportunity to influence change.
What was once considered a platform for keeping up with friends and family has now grown into the e-commerce space. You can sell, interact one-on-one with customers, and make short announcements or run ads about anything new in your company without breaking the bank.
Social media platforms like Instagram have become so powerful in the customer journey that customers will first interact with a company's social media profile before making a buying decision. As a business owner, you need to optimize and utilize the opportunity provided by social media sites to meet consumer demands.
Instagram has different account types tailored to different needs—i.e., personal, business, and creator. The basic features on Instagram remain the same across the whole platform. Still, additional features and tools are available for the profile types available for content creators, professionals looking to create an online brand, public figures, and business owners. These are the business and content creator account types. These accounts enable businesses and influencers to stand out with useful, additional features designed to help them utilize the platform maximumly.
Deciding what account you want all goes back to what your objectives are from having a presence on Instagram in the first place. However, before you choose which account to set up your brand, ask yourself, Is Instagram the right place for my product or service?
Even more importantly, who is your target customer, and how likely are they to use Instagram daily? Understanding this step is essential because it will allow you to define the rest of the process and optimize your business messages for your customers. You wouldn't want to sell something meant for a particular audience to the general public that doesn’t have daily use or interest in it.
Creator Versus Business Accounts
Instagram’s creator and business accounts are designed for those looking for a little more resources to help them use Instagram strategically, like learning about their audience, the audience behaviors, buying habits, etc. You can choose between a business account or a creator account, depending on the type of business you are running or the service provided; but which one is best for you?
Creator Account:
According to Instagram, creator accounts are best suited for public figures, content creators, photographers, artists, and influencers. Creator accounts were rolled out fairly recently and enable any user who wants to switch from a personal account to a creator account to do so with great ease. You can switch to this account type regardless of the number of followers, which wasn’t the case before. Using a creator account acts as a portfolio for creatives.
