In the ancient times, Astrology was used to diagnose diseases much before those could happen and also to take remedial measures to ward off these diseases. In this book, an attempt has been made to collect the various astrological combinations given in the classical books and also to add to these the combinations which have been found applicable to various new diseases based on statistical analysis.

Use of alternative medicine is prevalent in India. This includes messaging of human body with specific oil formations, derivatives of plants in the form of essence and aromatic scents. These systems are still prevalent in Kerala and other parts of South India.

Needless to say identification and treatment of various diseases based on planetary combinations in an individual horoscope are really very effective. Mention of such diseases and their cures is found in classical books like Bhrigu Samihita, Nadi Shastras, etc.

The extraordinary insight medical astrology affords the doctor into the nature of the whole of his patient has to be experienced and to be believed. The quick insight he can obtain in differential diagnosis will save his time. For instance, Saturn in Libra afflicting Mercury, induces very obscure spasms in the blood vessels of the kidney which frequently is confirmed only after many tests of the blood samples simply because the condition goes on changing with the movements of the planets. Similarly, in the realms of appendicitis, thousands of horoscopes have been studied and the fundamental astrological ingredients of the disease have been defined. Rahu and Mars prominent in respect to the 6th house reveal one's susceptibility to appendicitis and it will manifest under the directional influences of the afflicted planets.

Genesis

Some useful information is provided in this Chapter, which will be utilised throughout this book. Comprehensive knowledge of this will be helpful in study of Medical Astrology.

The Houses (Bhavas)

There are 12 houses in a Horoscope, the 1t house is known as ascendant (ascendant). The various houses can be classified into various categories.

(a)Quadrants (Kendras) Houses 1, 4, 7 and 10.

(b)Trines (Trikonas) Houses 1, 5 and 9.

(c)Successant (Panapharas) Houses 2, 5, 8 and 11.

(d)Cadent (Apoklimas) Houses 3, 6, 9 and 12.

(e)Houses of serious illness and death (Marksthanas) Houses 2 and 7.

(f)Houses of Longevity 3 and 8.

(g)Upachaya Houses 3, 6, 10 and 11.

(h)Trikasthanas Houses 6, 8 and 12.

Signs (Rashis)

The zodiac is divided into 12 parts called Signs, each having 30°. The details are given below:

Some characteristics of the signs:

1)Masculine: The odd signs, viz. 1, 3, 5, 7, 9 and 11.

2)Feminine: The even signs, viz. 2, 4, 6, 8, 10 and 12.

3)Movable Signs: Signs, 1,4, 7 and 10. Diseases occurring in these Signs are of short duration.

4)Fixed Signs: Signs, 2, 5, 8 and 11. Diseases occurring in these Signs last longer.

5)Mixed Signs: Signs, 3, 6, 9 and 12.

Dreshkana (D/3)

Dreshkana Chart is very helpful in identifying the disease precisely. It is also indicative of certain parts of the body affected by each Dreshkana.

To find out the exact Dreshkana, the following chart can be used. Find out the sign in which a particular planet is posited. In the horizontal row below that sign see vertically the degrees of the planet. The figure given at the junction of the horizontal row and the vertical column will indicate the sign of the planet in which it falls in Dreshkana.

Navamsa (D/ 9)

This is the most widely used chart to know the effect of each planet in a sign. Each sign is divided into nine equal parts of 3°-20’ .

To find out the exact Navamsa, the following chart can be used. Find out the sign in which a particular planet is posited. In the horizontal row below that sign see vertically the degrees of the planet. The figure given at the junction of the horizontal row and the vertical column will indicate the sign of the planet in which it falls in Navamsa.

Application of Decanate (Dreshkana)

The decanate is not only helpful in finding precisely the part of the body which will be effected by disease, but also is very effective for finding out the cause of the death of the person.

Some of the principles involved are as under:

उक्तयोगाभावेऽष्टमभावाधिष्ठितत्र्यंशेशस्योक्ताग्न्यंबवादि स्वगुणहेतुतो मृत्युः ।

(JT Tatav-3, Vivek-8, Sh. 98)

The cause of the death will be that declared for the lord of the decanate containing the 8th house. This is the 22nd decanate from the ascendant. The death will depend on fire, earth, air, water etc. according to the it’s character.

The 22th Dreshkana is always considered to be the worst for health of the native and is considered very effective while arriving at the death of the person.

निधनगद्रेष्काणतो वा मृत्युः ।

(JT T-3, V-8, Sh. 99)

Or the death may be declared through the decanate occupied by the planet in the 8th house.

मेषाद्यत्रयंशे प्​लीहजो वा विषजो वा पिक्तजो वा पित्त्जो मण्ये जलजोऽन्त्ये कूपादिपाततो मृत्युः ।

If the decanate in question be the first one of Aries, death will be through a disorder of the spleen, bilious complaints, or poison; if it be the middle one, death will be through watery diseases; and if it be the last, death will be by falling into a well and the like.

वृषादित्र्यंशे खराश्वादितो मध्ये पित्तीग्रिचोरतोऽन्त्ये उच्वस्थलाश्वादितो मृत्युः ।

If the said decanate be the first one of Taurus, death will be caused by asses, horses and the like; if it be the central one, through bilious complaints, fire; if the last, by a fall from the loft place, from a horse and the like.

युग्माद्ये वानश्वासतो मण्ये त्रिदोषादन्त्ये यानपर्वतपाततो वाऽरण्ये मृत्यु: ।

If the Dreshkana be the first one of Gemini, death will be through cough, asthma, etc., if the middle one, through typhoid; if the last, through a fall from a vehicle, from a precipice or in a forest.

कर्काद्येऽपेयपानात्कण्छकाद्वा मध्ये विषातिसारतोऽन्त्ये मोहभ्रमप्लीहगुल्मादितो मृत्युः ।

(JT T-3, V-8, Sh. 103)

If the Dreshkana be the first one of Cancer, death will be through prohibited drinks, or through thorns; if the middle one, through poison; if the last, death will be through syncope, vertigo or tumour.

सिंहाद्ये विषाम्बुरोगेण मध्ये श्वसनाम्बुरोगेणान्त्ये यानपीडाविषशस्त्रण मृत्यु: ।

(JT T-3, V-8, Sh. 104)

If the decanate be the first one of Leo, death will be by water contamination; if the middle one, through hydro-thorax (or water in the lungs), if the last, death will be caused by sea sickness, travelling sickness, surgical sepsis, etc.

कन्याद्ये वातमस्तकरोगेण मध्ये दुर्गाद्रिपानान्नृपकोपतीऽन्त्यं खरोष्ट्रशस्त्रम्बुपाततो मृत्युः ।

(JT T-3, V-8, Sh. 105)

If the case of the first decanate of Virgo, death will be by acute headache, wind disease, etc.; if the middle decanate, through a precipitous fall from a terrace or a peak; if the last, through fall from mules, explosion or a glass vessel, a fall into water and drowning.

तुलाद्ये पतनात स्त्रीतः पशुतो मध्ये जठररोगेणान्त्वे व्यालजलान्मृत्युः ।

(JT T-3, V-8, Sh. 106)

If the decanate be the first one of Libra, death will be through a fall, a female or a quadrupeg; if, the middle one, through digestive complaint; and if, the last, through snakes and water.

अल्याद्ये विषशस्त्रतो मध्ये भारश्रमाग कटिवस्तिरोगतोऽन्त्ये लोष्टकाष्ठपाषाणतो मृत्युः ।

(JT T-3, V-8, Sh. 107)

If the decanate under discussion be the first one of Scorpio, death will be caused through poison or weapons; if the decanate be the middle one of Scorpio, through faintings from inordinate strains or decompensation of the hip bladder or by carrying heavy weights, through complaints in the hips, etc.; if it be the last decanate, death will be through a lump of earth, timber or a stone slipping over the native.

चापाद्ये वातगुदामयान्मध्ये विषबाणाभ्यामन्त्ये जल जलचार्युदरामायान्मृत्युः ।

If the decanate containing the 8th bhava be the first one of Sagittarius, death will happen through colon and anal troubles; if the middle one, through poison or arrows; if the decanate in question be the last one, death will be through water, aquatic animals, abdominal complaints, etc.

मृगाद्ये सिंहवराहवृश्चिकतो मध्ये भुजङग्तोऽन्त्ये चौरा ग्निशस्त्रज्वरतो मृत्यु: |

(JT T-3, V-8, Sh. 109)

When the first decanate of Capricorn contains the 8th bhava, death will be caused by a lion, boar or scorpion; if the decanate be the middle one, it will be by a snake; if the last, it will be by thieves, fire weapon, or septic fever.

कुम्भाद्ये स्त्रयङग्​जोदरव्याधितो मध्ये गुह्यरोगादन्त्ये विषान्मृत्युः ।

If the decanate be the first one of Aquarius, death will be through a woman, love complaint, or pelvic complaint; if the middle one, through a disease in a internal sexual organs; if the last, through infection.

मीनाद्ये ग्रहिणी प्रमेहगुल्गतो मध्ये जलोदरगजग्राहतो नौप्रभेदादन्त्ये कुरोगान्मृत्युः ।

If the decanate in question be the first one of Pisces, death will be by dysentery, ascitis, or oesophagitis; if the middle one, through dropsy, or through oesophagitis; if the end, through the distension of the curvatures of the stomach.

Some important observations regarding Medical Astrology

1)Retrograde planets support longevity but affect health.

2)Benefics in angles promote health, but if they are retrograde and connected with main/sub-period (dasa) lord, these give ill health in their dasas, they give no protection against disease.

3)A strong lord of the ascendant, ensures recovery from ill heath.

4)A strong lord of the ascendant, 6th lord ensure resistance against sickness and recovery from ill health.

5)Malefics in quadrants and benefics in 6th or 8th makes one prone to ill health.

6)Natural benefics in angles and natural malefics in 3rd, 6th or/ and 11th give sound health.

7)Lord of the ascendant in 6th provides resistance against disease, yet it is not conducive for good health.

8)If lords of 6th or 8th are in ascendant, one is prone to ill health.

9)6th lord with a malefic in ascendant or in 6th or 8th gives injury to the part of the body signified by 6th house.

10)A benefic dasa following after illness shows recovery.

11)Lord of the ascendant and or Saturn in 8th give longevity but makes one prone to diseases.

12)Lord of the ascendant and 8th, if afflicted, gives many sufferings.

13)8th lord in lord of the ascendant makes the body sickly; even prolonged illness if afflicted.

14)Benefics in 8th gives chronicity of illness.

15)Mars & Ketu, and lords of 6th & 11th are injury planets. If these are related to ascendant injury takes place. Ketu in sign of Mars and aspected by Mars becomes a doubly killer.

16)Any planet to ascendant; if afflicted and weak, give diseases relating to the planet and the sign.

17)A retrograde lord of the ascendant; if runs its dasa, at birth, one is likely to have a congenial disease.

18)Saturn is a disease giving planet. Its affliction to the lords of 5th house from ascendant, Sun and Moon gives chronic ailments.

19)If lord of the ascendant is debilated and Moon is afflicted in Scorpio, it gives hydrocele.

20)Mars-Saturn in 6th give stomach problems.

21)High blood pressure is caused by a weak and afflicted Moon and a strong but afflicted Mars.

22)Low blood pressure is caused by a weak and afflicted Moon and a weak but afflicted Mars.

23)Afflicted Jupiter as lord of 6th or in 6 gives diabetes.

24)Mercury in 6th in a female sign under malefic influence gives brain trouble in old age.

25)Rahu-Ketu axis falling on ascendant, lord of the ascendant or dasa lords is an adverse factor for health.

26)Moon and Mars represent blood and their affliction gives blood disorders.

27)Malefic transits aggravate illnesses.

28)Normally, a single affliction is not serious. A double affliction indicates serious disease; triple or multiple afflictions give incurable diseases. Rahu’s role gives undiagnosed diseases.

29)Severity of disease depends upon the extent of affliction to ascendant and the 7th lord and main period, sub-period, sub-sub-period lords i.e. Maha Dasa, Antar Dasa and Partantyar Dasa.

30)Diseases/ accidents, all related to disease or if they are cause of accident, malefic transit confirms the situation.

31)Rahu is a separative, severing, restrictive and a disease giver planet.

32)Ketu’s influence on ascendant gives innumerable operations.

33)The lord of 1st month of conception is Venus; 2nd Mars; 3rd Jupiter; of 4th Sun; of 5th Moon; of 6 Saturn; of 7 Mercury; of 8th lord of the ascendant; of 9th Moon and of the 10th Sun.

34)For timing of disease calculate Main period (MP)/ Sub-period (SP)/ Sub-sub-period (SSP). Sub-sub-period (Pratantyara dasa) indicates actual precipitation of disease.

35)Main period/ Sub-period/ Sub-sub-period of death inflicting (Marka) planet for a particular ascendant leads to proneness to disease.

i)These adverse influences are more pronounced if MP/ SP/SSP fords are connected with ascendant or lord of the ascendant.

ii)Link of a benefic with ascendant or lord of the ascendant and MP lord or SP lord causes recovery.

iii)Adverse results are accentuated if ascendant and lords of MP/ SP/ SSP get afflicted by natural malefics or lords of 6th, 8th and 12th houses.

36)Rahu-Ketu axis failing on ascendant, lord of the ascendant or lord of MP/ SP is adverse factor for health.

37)i)Natural benefics in angles give protection from disease.

ii)Natural malefics in angles indicate ill health.

iii)Retrograde natural benefics in angles lead to disease during their periods.

iv)Retrograde natural malefics are still worse and cause serious diseases.

38)Natural malefics in 3rd, 6th and 11th house provide resistance to disease.

39)When an adverse period (dasa) lord associates with ascendants or lord of the ascendant, health suffers.

40)Involvement of period (dasa) lord in Rahu-Ketu axis increases the malaficence of dasa lord.

41)In divisional charts, period lords cause illness, if:

i)Period lords are ascendant lords or are lords of houses where ascendant is posited.

ii)Period lord is in 6th, 8th, 12th from ascendant or lord of the ascendant.

iii)Period lord is lord of 6th, 8th, 12th houses.

iv)Aspect or association of Saturn or Mars on period lords.

v)Period lords on Rahu-Ketu axis.

42)Mars’s repeated role in divisional chart confirms operation.

43)Retrogrades in their periods give adverse results if they are related to the ascendant.

44)When Mars, Saturn, Rahu and Ketu transit the adverse houses, their lords if period (dasa) lord produce malefic effects and cause disease.

45)6th lord with a malefic in ascendant or 6th or 8th house causes injury to the parts of the body signified by 6th house.

46)Asingle affliction is not serious, a double affliction indicates serious disease, triple or multiple afflictions cause incurable diseases.

47)A benefic period followed after illness shows recovery.

48)Astrong ascendant or lord of the ascendant ensures recovery.

49)Period of a strong 6th lord gives resistance and recovery.

50)Jupiter's aspect on period lords in birth chart or during transit favours recovery.

51)Strong ascendant posited in 3rd or 11th ensures recovery.

Chapter - II

Significators

The signs represent the following parts of the body and diseases:
