David Williams

David Williams was a writer best known for his crime-novel series featuring the banker Mark Treasure and police inspector DI Parry. After serving as Naval Officer in the Second World War, Williams completed a History degree at St Johns College, Oxford before embarking on a career in advertising. He became a full-time fiction writer in 1978. Williams wrote twenty-three novels, seventeen of which were part of the Mark Treasure series of whodunnits which began with Unholy Writ (1976). His experience in both the Anglican Church and the advertising world informed and inspired his work throughout his career. Two of Williams' books were shortlisted for the Crime Writers' Association Gold Dagger Award, and in 1988 he was elected to the Detection Club.

    Preface

    The story of the Myrewood, and all tales set in Ardul, are only one half of a whole. The other half is set in music, also written by David Williams. This idea of stories in music isn’t new, far from it. But this one was born to be in both. Some of the best stories told outside of text have legendary musical scores to enhance the experience.

    You may not be too interested the style of music this has been set to so far, unless you like loud symphonic death metal with harsh vocals. And that’s okay. But that’s where a lot of the experience is in this story: the melodies and emotions and motifs. The dark in dark fantasy really comes out in the music.

    A lot of intention and care went into this creation, and many years of it waiting to be born and released into the world.

    This is just the beginning. There’s a whole world of stories waiting to be told.

    Chapter 1

    Along the worn path, a caravan with several escorts rode late at night. The armored riders all carried torches while the decorated and lavish carriage was lit with lanterns. Inside, the prince of Dyffryn, Frederic, and his court were bleary eyed.

    How much further until we reach Talamgard? the prince asked as he rubbed his forehead and pulled his brown hair back. The carriage jostled roughly and he knocked his head against the wall. He glared at the roof as if it had done it on purpose. Once he let go of the transgression, he tried to get comfortable again as he readjusted and lifted himself up, and finally plopped down, then groaned in discomfort.

    Collin, an older man with a well-practiced expression of patience on his face, replied, "Normally the voyage is three days, but
