Chapter One: The Client

The rain beat down on the city like a boxer working a punching bag. I sat in my office, nursing a cup of black coffee that was as bitter as my outlook on life. The neon sign outside my window flickered, casting a sickly green glow across the room. The clock on the wall ticked away the minutes, each one dragging me closer to midnight.

I was Sam Mercer, a detective with a knack for finding trouble. And trouble had a way of finding me, too. The office smelled of stale smoke and desperation. My desk was cluttered with case files, each one a testament to someone else’s misery.
