    Chapter One

    Warden Nolan Keats had always prided himself on running the tightest ship in the Atlantic Federation of Maximum Security Prisons. The unforgiving walls of the Oceana Penitentiary, rising like blackened teeth against the gray sky, had never been breached nor had its secrets ever spilled from within its fortress-like confines. A former detective with an impeccable record, Keats’ transition to warden was as seamless as it was surprising to his peers. His methodical nature, attention to detail, and an uncanny ability to predict inmates’ behavior made him an ideal sentinel for the condemned.

    It was an unremarkably cool morning as Warden Keats made his rounds, his steps echoing down the desolate corridor known as the Gauntlet, where the most notorious inmates were held. He passed by the cells with little more than a cursory glance through the bars – most of the occupants were either still sleeping or staring blankly at the stone walls that defined their existence. There was an eerie calm, like the still air before a storm, and it was precisely this kind of calm that put Keats on edge.

    Keats paused at the end of the corridor before the door that led to cell 113, also known as the paradox cell. It was a moniker born of an old legend that the cell was cursed; every inmate who had ever been confined within its walls was said to have met an untimely and often unexplainable demise. Keats didn’t believe in curses, but he couldn't deny that the cell had a peculiar history.
