On My High Horse - Samuel Ludke
Talking cowboys
The campfire crackles, stars ablaze,
Two cowboys huddle, end of graze.
Sun sets slow, paints the sky red,
Words are slow, but wisdom's said.
Jebediah, beard like tangled wire,
Spits tobacco, sets the fire
A-dancing with a flick of wrist,
Says, "Heard a tale 'bout a maverick kissed
By lightning, turned its coat pure white,
A ghost of a beast, vanished with the night.

Of cattle drives, and the wind within.
More whispers shared, of love and loss,
A distant dream, at a terrible cost.

Under the sky, where secrets slept.
The fire dwindles, embers glow,
Two cowboys rest, a bond they know.
For words may fly, and stories roam,
But cowboys' hearts beat as one, far from home.
Haters
The barbs may sting, the words like stones,
A chorus raised in mocking tones.
They point
