    Definition and Overview

Chemtrails, a portmanteau of chemical and trails, refer to the belief in certain conspiracy theory circles that the visible trails left by aircraft in the sky are not ordinary condensation trails (contrails) but rather chemical or biological agents deliberately sprayed at high altitudes. This theory posits that these substances are dispersed for nefarious purposes, which theorists speculate range from weather manipulation and mind control to population control and poisoning the environment.

Contrails, on the other hand, are condensation trails formed when hot humid air from jet exhaust mixes with environmental air of lower vapor pressure and temperature. This process is similar to how breath condenses into vapor on a cold day. Contrails are composed primarily of water, in the form of ice crystals, and are a normal byproduct of jet engines operating at high altitude. The appearance and duration of contrails can be influenced by the plane's altitude, ambient temperature, and humidity levels. Persistent contrails occur in parts of the sky where the high altitude air is moist enough to support the formation of cirrus clouds.

To the untrained eye, distinguishing between a contrail and what conspiracy theorists call a chemtrail can be difficult, leading to significant public concern and confusion. The theory has no scientific evidence to support these claims, and experts in atmospheric science consistently debunk the notion that chemtrails are anything other than contrails. Nonetheless, the term chemtrail
