    Prologue

It started with a social media scrum of a conversation. Ten, maybe twelve of us, had exchanged group messages over the past six or eight days leading up to Valentine’s Day. None of us were single, so we didn’t have to worry about turning a friend suicidal over not having someone.

Candace: What’s the best Valentine present you ever received?

Kella: Sex. Lots of it, but mostly oral.

    Jaxson: My kind of gift!

I laughed a lot at the responses, but I didn’t say much. From time to time, I’d look over my shoulder to where Mike, my husband of nearly three decades, was snoring on the couch. He’d never been a passionate man. Nor romantic. But he was still here. Part of my life. And consistency like that means something. Right?

Alison: Last year my girlfriend hand-calligraphed a love letter to me. It was beautiful!

Me: God, that sounds amazing. I wish someone would write me a love letter. Something to hold onto when I’m sad.

The snoring paused and I looked at Mike again. He wasn’t that kind of man. But there was a lot to be said for a man that just didn’t walk away. Right? Solid. Consistent. That was just a different kind of beautiful, right?

A flashing in the lower right corner of my screen drew my attention and I clicked it. Cole, one of our newer members had sent it to me. Why would he do that? Only one way to find out. Click.

Cole: Are you serious? Tell me you aren’t serious. How can someone not write you love letters?

Me: It just isn’t how we are. Old married couple, I guess.

Cole: You know I’m going to send you a letter, right?

I looked at his words. Was… he trying to say he had a crush on me? I thought back over our scant interactions. There was no flirting. Nothing even close to sexy.

Or was he just being kind? Would a man send a woman a love letter just because he thought she needed to have one? What would that mean, anyway? Wouldn’t it cheapen things to know it was just pretty words?

Me: If you send it, I will read it. I promise.

That was it. No answer. When I heard the recliner fold up, I figured it was time for bed. I sent a quick goodnight and stood up from my desk just in time for Mike to swat me on the ass.

Come on, Betty, he growled, loose phlegm rattling in his throat. Let’s see if we can sleep that bed into submission again.

I lifted on my toes to kiss the corner of his mouth. Then he stumbled
