Chapter 1: Uncertain Waiting
The sterile white glow of the hospital entrance sign assaulted Marissa's eyes the moment Lucas pulled the car to a stop. It felt like a slap in the face, a harsh contrast to the swirling chaos of the accident scene that replayed in her mind on a relentless loop. The screech of tires, the sickening thud of metal on flesh, Josh's lifeless body crumpling to the asphalt – it all threatened to rise up and consume her again.
Lucas reached out, squeezing her hand gently. His fingers felt cool against her clammy skin. You sure you'll be okay?
His voice was a mere whisper, laced with fatigue and worry etched deep in his dark brown eyes.
Marissa forced a shaky smile. Yeah, I'll be fine. Thanks for dropping me off.
Her words came out brittle, each syllable a fragile shard threatening to shatter.
Lucas studied her for a long moment, his brow furrowed. The fluorescent glow from the streetlight cast harsh shadows that accentuated the worry lines around his eyes. Marissa,
he started, then stopped. The words seemed to catch in his throat, unspoken anxieties clinging to the air like dust particles.
It's okay,
she murmured, leaning into his touch for a fleeting moment of comfort. Just go. You need to get to work.
He sighed, the sound heavy and defeated. I wish I could stay.
I know,
she whispered, her voice thick with emotion. But you can't. You have responsibilities.
Lucas nodded curtly, the tension in his jaw barely concealed. They sat in silence for a few more heartbeats, the weight of the unspoken hanging heavy between them.
Lucas cleared his throat. If you need anything at all, anything,
he repeated, his voice firm, call me. Don't hesitate.
I know,
Marissa said, her voice barely a whisper.
