True to the teddy bear - EDGARS AUZIŅŠ
Chapter 1
Christina and I walked through the shopping center. My friend chirped cheerfully, while I walked gloomily next to her. Why have fun?! She and I are going to practice in Tmutarakansk tomorrow. And it's all because of this damn virus! The epidemic has covered the country, and we, as future defenders of cattle, are rushing to the rescue of the poor cattle. And the management doesn’t care that we ourselves can become infected. Everyone is going to arrange preventive vaccinations for cows. And period. Our country is agricultural and it will not survive the fall of a small number of money-making animals, but veterinary students must get used to it.
Christina was more enthusiastic about this news than I was. We were freed from boring lectures, we are going to nature, and what else do we need?! And the weather has improved. It was spring outside the window. The girl smiled and thought about buying something like this to amaze the rural youth.
- Don't frown? — she pushed me in the side. - Fresh air, change of scenery. We’ll help the cows," seeing that I didn’t react to these remarks, she continued. — We’ll take the locals to a disco. Let's go buy something.
Christina,
I besieged her, we are going to a remote, distant village.
It's dirty and unsanitary. The only thing we need to buy is new rubber boots..... And a padded jacket.
You’re evil Marina,
her friend pouted.
- I am not angry. I'm truthful. And I don’t like rose-colored glasses,
I answered. No one will notice your newfangled blouses and jeans there.
And you can very well freeze and catch a cold in them. After all, you'll end up in quarantine. But the boots will come in handy.
Christina sighed, understanding the veracity of my words, and walked through the shopping center with a less joyful face.
- Let's go, shall we buy some perfume? - she suggested. - To cover up the smell of manure.
But this is possible,
I supported her. Although I don’t know what could interrupt him.
We entered a small boutique, and Christina immediately went to the shelf with perfumes from famous brands. I slowly approached the sales consultant. Surprisingly, she was not a young, obsessive girl, but a portly woman of Balzac’s age.
Good afternoon,
she greeted and looked at me over her very peculiar, obviously expensive glasses. —Are you looking for something specific? Can I give you a hint?
Good,
I answered and smiled, imagining how the woman’s face would stretch from my answer. - Yes. I'm looking for something special that can brighten up my loneliness in the village and kill the smell of cows.
The woman laughed. Her laughter was not unpleasant, it was a kind, warm laugh. This is how friends laugh at each other.
Girl,
she answered, laughing. - I have for you what you are looking for.
I stared at the saleswoman with interest. To be honest, she surprised me. Usually consultants, as soon as they hear about the village and the cows, can barely contain the disdain on their face and try to get rid of you as quickly as possible. And I'm also a student. Where does a student get money for expensive perfume?
The woman leaned over and began looking for something under the counter. Taking it out, she lovingly stroked the box and brushed off the dust.
Here, look,
and opening the box, she handed me a small jar in the shape of a wolf.
I sniffed and grimaced. The smell was pungent and disgusting.
- Not that? - she clarified.
I shook my head negatively. She took the bottle and crawled back under the counter. Another bottle appeared in the shape of a cat. The smell just made me shudder, it was so sweet.
Not mine at all,
I said, returning the bottle.
The woman handed me a can of coffee beans. I obediently inhaled the aroma of the grains and was just about to leave when the woman handed me another bottle. I didn’t even notice how it ended up in her hands.
Here, try this one,
she handed me a bottle in the shape of a bear cub.
What a beautiful bottle,
I answered, turning it over in my hands and slowly inhaling the aroma. The teddy bear was very funny and cute, even though it was made of glass. It could only be purchased for the bottle. - But maybe it’s not necessary?
I was still cringing and nauseous from the previous vile smell.
- Don't worry. It's hard to find your scent, but once you find it, your life will completely change. Trust me. And the bottle is really beautiful,
the woman answered, smiling and nudging me under her elbow. - But the most interesting thing is inside. Smell it.
I obediently uncorked the bottle and carefully inhaled the aroma. I froze. It was something with something. An indescribably exciting, alluring and dizzying smell. At the same time exciting and giving self-confidence.
Yes,
I answered with a breath, closing my eyes. - You are absolutely right.
- What do you have there? — Seeing my delight, Kristinka jumped up to me.
It’s an amazing scent,
I answered, handing her the bottle.
I don’t feel anything,
she wrinkled her nose, sniffing. - There is no smell at all.
You just don’t feel it anymore.
Smell the coffee.
It won’t help,
the saleswoman grinned. Not everyone can smell this scent.
He is special and chooses special girls for himself. You are the first in many years to whom he approached.
I stared at the woman in surprise, what does it mean, he chooses his own scent?!
Take it, honey,
she continued, not noticing my surprised face. - This is a gift for you from our company.
It’s probably very expensive,
I muttered.
Everything has its price,
she grinned. - Just don’t use it in the city. This is of no use. But when you come to Surveliski, use it for your own pleasure.
- Where did you get the idea that we were going to Survelishki? - I was surprised.
So you told me yourself,
the woman answered, not at all embarrassed.
I stared at the saleswoman in bewilderment. I didn’t seem to suffer from sclerosis. I didn’t tell her anything like that!
- Take the gift and don’t share it with anyone. Good luck to you," this strange woman told me in a conspiratorial whisper.
Thank you,
I muttered in shock.
Having decided to act according to the saying: If they hit, run, if they give, take.
In shock, I stuffed the bottle into my backpack and, as if in prostration, I left this boutique. Christina followed me.
— What’s wrong with you, Marin? — my friend tugged at my sleeve.
Yes, she’s kind of strange, this saleswoman,
I muttered in response.
Okay,
Chris waved her hand. - She gave you the perfume you liked. Rejoice!
I’m kind of scared of such a gift,
I honestly admitted.
Don’t worry about it,
said my friend. - Let's go pick out some boots.
I smiled and we went to the shoe store. There we chose a pair of bright rubber boots with flowers and, in high spirits, returned to the hostel to prepare for tomorrow's practice.
Chapter 2
Iwas sitting in my office studying a new multi-million dollar contract. Against the backdrop of the global crisis, it was supposed to bring me a lot of money. As usual, having stayed late at work, I wasn’t expecting anyone. And then the door opens, and my mother appears on the threshold. I can't say that I was very happy to see her. No, I love my mother, but her incessant attempts to get married really irritate me.
Good evening, son,
she greeted.
I chuckled. No matter how mature, serious and strong I am for her, I will always be a son.
Good, mom,
I answered, looking up from the contract. What brings you to my office at such a late hour?
It turned out a little pretentious, but cultural!
- Why can’t I visit my son just like that? - she was surprised.
You can,
I nodded. But that doesn’t sound like you.
The woman grinned and, sitting down on a chair, answered:
- You're right, I came on business. Your gift that I wanted to give you for your sixteenth birthday is ready! - she announced solemnly.
I instantly forgot about the contract. For sixteen year olds?! Yes, I was sixteen, God knows when! I looked closely into my mother’s eyes and sucked in air through my nose. She seems to be sober, but she says some nonsense.
- What do you mean? — I clarified warily.
Clotilde found a match for you,
the woman answered proudly. - A true couple! — she repeated with emphasis on the first word so that I could feel the event.
- Are you kidding? - I was surprised. — Fourteen years have passed since then. What the hell is a couple?
- True! - Mom was not at all embarrassed. - Son, I see that other women are not interested in you.
Because they’re all corrupt bitches,
I snapped.
- That's it. And the girl we found for you is good. Just go and have a look. If you don’t like it, you don’t even have to approach her," she began to persuade. - Son, well, for my sake.
The idea of finding a true match for me was stuck in my mom’s head deeply, for a long time and for a long time. What did she do about it? And introduced her to the prospective candidates. Moreover, these acquaintances sometimes took on a very extravagant character. I could come home and find a completely unfamiliar girl in my bed, who, innocently batting her eyes, began to explain to me that my mother liked her!
She forced me to attend all community gatherings. When I ran out of patience, she hired Clotilde. This is the most famous matchmaker
