    Silence filled the car as Jade focused on driving in the pouring rain.  The only sounds were the windshield wipers and the clicking noises of the text her son was furiously typing out.

    So what did you do at your dad’s this weekend? she asked, finally breaking the silence.  Several seconds went by until she was answered with a sarcastic, Huh?

    Jade sighed deeply, making the decision to strike up a conversation if it killed her. 

    It had only been six months since she and Jerrod had separated and not only did it seem she separated from her husband, but her son as well. 

    I haven’t seen you in two days Braden, I missed you and wondered what you have been up to.  She dug within the depths of her to keep her voice bright, to refrain from the typical mom routine and try to pal around with him. 

    Braden dropped his arms in frustration, his phone landing on his lap.  Well, mom, dad and I went and played a few rounds of golf on Saturday, and then he and Rayna took me to dinner and we did some shopping.  Today we looked at cars. 

    He then returned to his phone screen, as if he didn’t just speak to her like a total smart ass.  Jade looked over at him incredulously, trying to keep her mouth from falling open.
