Detroit Daliance - Robert J. Morrow

    CHAPTER ONE

    London

Everyone on the plane clapped as soon as we touched the tarmac.  Even the claw-handed woman next to me who had been ranting about how pilots and their massive egos thought they could outfly lightning.  She gave me a sheepish smile as she undid her seat belt and wedged herself into the line of passengers deplaning as fast as they could shuffle down the narrow aisle.

I leaned back in my seat and took another look out the window.  The sky crackled with electricity, bolts of lightning flashed from cloud to cloud.  It was good to be on the ground, but I was in Detroit.

It was starting to feel like I would never get back to New York City.

We apologize for the rough landing, a flight attendant told me.  They'll have hotel vouchers for you.  All air travel will resume in the morning after the storm front passes.

    Thanks, I said.

I was one of the last passengers on the plane and the flight attendant was waiting for me.  If it had been any other city, I would have raced along with the crowd.  But, this was Detroit.  And last I heard, Daniel was in Detroit.

For as long as I had stalled, I still got caught in the undertow of displaced passengers.  The crowd moved along past all the closed up kiosks and shuttered restaurants of the main concourse.  Down the escalators to baggage claim, everyone assuming their stuff was gone until they saw it in rotation on the baggage carousel.

I said ‘excuse meat least ten times as I pushed through the crowd and snagged my suitcase.  Who says New Yorkers are rude?  Then thunder shook the high glass windows of the airport and I knew the next stampede would be for the cab line.

One more 'excuse me' got me to the edge of the mob.  The stairs had been cordoned off, but I slipped under the rope and took a seat half a dozen steps up.  I just needed to sit down.  It had been a dizzying flight from Trinidad back to the states and my head needed a minute to catch up with the rest of me.

The anxious crowd finally started to thin.  Traffic noise outside the tall windows increased as cabs and shuttles pulled up to the curb, but it couldn't drown out the growling of the massive thunderstorm.

Another foundation-rumbling crack of thunder and I was ready to book the next flight back to the Caribbean.  Why had I ever left Trinidad?

    Jean-Luc was there.

After our awkward connection turned into something real, it had all been so easy and carefree.  The second I had packed for New York City, it had all fallen apart.  His sister had a huge blow-out fight with her husband and Jean-Luc was barely able to drop me at the airport.  He promised he'd consider visiting New York City, but that was only seconds before he rushed off to help his sister with her broken heart.

Traveling to see me again was going to come in a far second to being with his family.  On the island he loved.
