Pregnant By My Roommate - Violet Rae

    Chapter 1

    Olivia

I can’t believe it. He left me the house.

What do you mean? Suzi asks, her voice echoing down the phone line.

Grandpa Bill left me his house in his will, I repeat, still trying to wrap my head around it.

Oh, my God! Mind you, I’m not surprised, Liv. You were close. He loved you more than anything, Suzi points out.

I swallow the lump in my throat. Why didn’t he leave it to Cameron? He’s older than me.

Because Cameron is on active duty and hardly ever home. Your grandpa knew how much you love that house. You spent a lot of time there as a kid.

    Yeah, I guess.

    What did your parents say?

They’re cool about it. I’m not sure how cool they’ll be when I tell them I want to move in.

You’re coming to Silver Springs? Suzi squeaks.

I nod, even though she can’t see me. Yeah. It makes sense. I’ll be closer to work. Right now, the commute is killing me. An hour each way is no joke after a ten-hour day.

The dream team, together at last. Rocking those sexy paint-splattered overalls, Suzi says excitedly.

Suzi and I met in college. Like me, she always wanted a career in interior design and decor, so we connected the moment we met. When she asked me to be her business partner after we qualified, I jumped at the chance. Suzi lives in Silver Springs, which is a little farther away than I would’ve liked, but she inherited an established painting and decorating business from her step-father, who was retiring, so it was too good an opportunity to pass up. Now, it seems like fate because that’s where Grandpa’s house is.

    Hardly sexy, I snort.

I’m sure there are men out there who like a dirty woman, Suzi snorts.

I raise my eyes to the ceiling, imagining her wicked grin. Do you have to make everything sexual?

Yep. I’m good at it. But you know what they say—those who talk about it the most are the ones who aren’t getting any.

You and me both. I pause, looking at my friend. Do you think we’re crazy?

Why? Because we haven’t let a man put his wand in our chamber of secrets? she asks with a snigger.

I groan. Such a sophisticated way with words.

It’s why you love me. I make you laugh, Suzi says firmly.

She’s not wrong. She made me laugh the day we met, and she hasn’t stopped since. We’re more like sisters than best friends.

But to answer your question, no, we’re not crazy, Suzi continues. We’re just choosy. We want it to be special, to have it mean something.

Yeah, but I didn’t think we’d still be waiting for a wand at twenty-two, I laugh.

It’ll be worth the wait if it’s a long, thick wand that shoots magic from the tip. Can you imagine having that up your foo-foo? Suzi roars with laughter.

I’m so glad I’ve got you, I say once I’ve stopped laughing. It’s been a rough few weeks. You’ve always got my back.

Like a thong up your crack, Suzi quips, keeping it real, as always. There’s a pause on the other end of the line. Seriously, Liv, do you want to talk about your grandpa?

    No, I'm okay. But thanks.

Grandpa’s death was sudden. He died of a heart attack. If I’m honest, I’m a bit relieved it was quick and he didn’t suffer. He was such a vital man and withering away in a hospital bed would’ve been his worst nightmare.

You know I'm here for you, Suzi says softly.

Thanks, love. What would I do without you?

You’d be utterly lost. You’d be sad and alone and wither up like an old raisin. You’d—

Okay, okay! I chuckle, holding up a hand. I get it. You’re irreplaceable

Do you need a hand moving your stuff in?

Thanks, but I don’t have much to move in. The house is fully furnished, so I should be good. Grandpa had the whole place redecorated before he moved to the retirement village. A tenant was living in the house but the leasing agent gave him notice, so he’s moved out.

Okay, well, just holler when you’re settled and I’ll be round with pizza and wine. My treat.

Your treat, huh? Now there’s an offer I can’t refuse.

A week later, I’m headed to my new home in Silver Springs. Mom and Dad were a little shocked at first when I told them about my plans, but they knew it made sense for me to move there for work. It’s not like I’ll be a million miles away, and they can come visit.

Within an hour, I’m pulling up outside Grandpa's house—well, my house now. I haven't been here since he moved into the retirement village more than a year ago, so it’s a bittersweet moment.

I bite my lips as I take in my new home—a two-story colonial-style house with a brick exterior and gabled roof. The front door is centered in the middle of the house with large windows on either side.

I’m swamped by memories of my youth. Grandpa was a wonderful, lively man and we had many fun moments in this house. I miss him a lot. I’ve lived in Medicine Bow all my life, but somehow, this feels like coming home.

I remove my packing boxes from the trunk and the backseat of my car and line them up by the front door before rooting around in my purse for the key. It suddenly occurs to me that maybe I should’ve checked the place out before deciding to move in. It was a bit of an impulsive decision. The place could be a disaster inside, although until recently, it was occupied by a tenant, so it can’t be too bad.

I jam the key into the lock and push the door open a little. Home, sweet home, I murmur to myself.

I poke my head inside, relieved to see that everything looks clean and tidy. I grab one of the boxes and step inside. The house looks even
