About this ebook

In her quest to promote positive causes and maintain a good image, schoolteacher Lydia Walker has recently become a member of a new community organisation in Christerton. The group is dedicated to creating an inclusive environment and actively combating racism. Through educating her students about the historical injustices of her own country, her belief system gradually begins to shape the dynamics within the children’s households. The more she uncovers about her own belief system, the more it veers unexpectedly into a downward spiral.

Kath is the author of Arrest, an ongoing and experimental book written without a fixed plotline. It was in 2017 that Kath Ede discovered a passion for writing fiction. Prologue

Mrs Walkers eyes darted around the classroom as she attempted to control the children's behaviour. The arrogance and contrivance with which they misbehaved was impossible to ignore. Inspired by the classes she saw in a documentary, she yearned for a similar learning environment. The education provided to those children in Africa was highly valued and appreciated by them.

They obediently sat down, following instructions without hesitation. The children admired their teachers and were driven by a strong desire to please them. Unlike the sheltered children in Christerton, these kids had faced real hardships in their lives. Similarly, the parents of the children were accustomed to a life filled with luxurious comforts, a stark contrast to those living in Africa and the Third World. Even those parents who were living on the poverty line were prerequisite by comparison.

Mrs Walkers voice was drowned out by the noisy chatter of the children in the classroom. She let out a sigh of defeat, her eyes dropping to the floor. Then, she employed her tried-and-true approach to bring the conceited children down a notch.

‘Quiet!’ she screamed, as the children snapped their heads around to her. Some of the more boisterous children continued to laugh. Mrs Walker narrowed her eyes as her stare focused on them. Her hand instinctively moved up to her jumper, where the feminist badge proudly displayed its message. Once there, her fingers nervously fumbled with the badge, seeking reassurance.

‘Right. For that, the lesson will extend into your break for ten minutes. Take the next ten minutes to delve into the reasons behind your privileges in this country and confront the painful history of exploitation and violence perpetrated by your ancestors. Write your answers down. Then we will continue with the lesson as planned.’

Mrs Walker had learned the technique in a group she joined, inspired by the documentary. Whites for Blacks was a group focused on bridging racial divides, aimed to equip white individuals with the knowledge and tools to actively support and defend minority races. The children let out a collective groan, their murmurs filling the air, as they contemplated the interruption of their break time with more lessons.
