    Chapter 1

    Geronimo

Westminster London is a place of status and for people of high standard. House No. 145 at Downing street was the ancestral home of Geronimo. He was the owner of 200 acres of cultivatable land.

The farm was a rectangular piece of land with an old fashioned villa at one end and a small house at the other that was used as a store house for the produce of the crops. The land was surrounded on the west by the main road leading to Colorado, and the other three sides were mostly light forest and beyond it, the beautiful and magical view of the rocky mountains of the Colorado.

Geronimo was a decent farmer and used to make a living by tiling his land with barley and wheat. This was in the early 1910's. A balding forehead and long greying hair going down in curls with an uncut beard, giving him the look of an ancient pagan. He was from Spain and had inherited this land from his uncle as there was no one else to claim it during that time.

They had some horses and a couple of carts for transporting the grains. Not forgetting a bicycle which was used for going to town. He was married early at the age of 18 to a neighbor of his uncle Leo. His wife Xuan was a refugee from Vietnam. She was uneducated and was also aged 18 at the time and was not even aware of anything of her origin. They seemed to be very happy as Nimo, (his nickname) was just a farmer and Xuan was a hard worker in the fields. They did well selling the produce to the local markets. He maintained the villa and the outhouse well, as well as lived a good decent life. They had only one son named Pedro. Nimo was more engrossed with his farming and Pedro did only a little education going to a local school in Westminster. He was more of a playful boy but never went off his tracks. He studied by himself and played by himself and had not many friends. After tenth grade he gave up and started helping his father saying that he wanted to become a farmer too. Pedro's father got him married to a known girl named 'Bela' at the age of 22 shortly after the death of Xuan due to a brief illness. Things were going on in a smooth way as long as Nimo was handling the household. There is not much to describe about this trinity as there was not much activity in their lives except for farming.

    Pedro

Geronimo, now dead, his son Pedro, was the sole owner of the land and house. His wife Bela was not happy with him as she was more of the outgoing and fun loving personality unlike Pedro. She would constantly nag him for having her live this simple life. She wanted to spend lavishly and hang out in pubs and restaurants. Frequently she would sneak out and meet some friend or the other and they would go for a fling and get drunk and probably laid. After Pedro found out about her there would be regular arguments between them. Why cant we enjoy life? she would scream. What can you do with the peanuts that you are earning?. There were many occasions where she had disappeared the whole night and returned late next day all disheveled and drunk. This went on for a few years when finally one fine day Bela left him with their two young children, Rego, a boy of 8 and a 2 year old girl Maria, and ran away with a Filipino driver in 1942.

Pedro was not good at maintaining the farmland and his business but just made ends meet with a little farming that he did. Rego grew up fast and was not happy with his fathers achievements and used to get aggressive sometimes, probably he took to his mother. He was more adventurous and money minded. After he completed his tenth grade, he met one of his friends who coaxed him to start some business. They started small by going to neighboring towns and purchasing cheap garments. These they would sell in another area for a good profit. Soon he made quick
