The BEST of Intentions - Arlene M. Jullie

    The Idea Behind the

    Purpose and Intent Pages

Many years ago, Christmas was approaching, and, once again, I had no gift for my husband Joe. In the past, I had tried buying him shirts and shoes, which he inevitably took back to the store. I had wrapped up and given him books, but he said he wanted the audio version and ended up ordering his own online. One year, I got him a mini trampoline that was good for his metabolism; it’s still sitting in the basement, mostly ignored. He’s one of these men for whom it’s impossible to shop. But one year, I had a brainstorm! It was more than a brainstorm: it was a nudge, an inspiration … a message from God.

For quite some time, we had begun to write down our goals, or better put, our intentions, each time we took a trip, hosted a party or family get-together, started a project, planned a new direction in our business, or made decisions regarding our personal finances and important purchases. We wrote our intentions on post-it notes, scraps of paper, notepads, whatever was easily within reach. We were often in the car on the way to the airport, the office, an appointment, or a meeting. We sometimes wrote down what we would be saying after the event or activity was over. It was always a positive, sometimes outrageous, not-to-be-expected or counted-on outcome, but usually a last-minute activity.

That unforgettable year, I gave Joe the best gift he’s ever received, one that we have both used and benefited from ever since and which has literally changed our lives. I created a colorful cover with the title PURPOSE AND INTENT BOOK and our names printed below. I filled it with one hundred lined, blank pages on which we could write down our Purpose and Intent each time we felt the need. We have since gone through at least five of these spiral-bound books - that’s over five hundred pages! Writing our Purpose and Intent Pages is as much of a ritual as brushing our teeth. We have even used it on unplanned trips to the hospital, like when Joe was sent to the ER because the doctors were concerned that it could be the onset of a heart attack, or after I had been told that I had a dense mass in my right breast. Each time an event was coming up, or if something unexpected happened, we wrote a Purpose and Intent detailing our expected or desired outcome, always a happy one, of course, and that’s what we got!

When I began what I consider to be my spiritual path (my road less traveled), one of the first ideas that knocked my socks off was that thoughts are things. The renowned American Christian mystic Edgar Cayce said, For thoughts are things, and the Mind is the builder. He meant that our thoughts, or what we think with our minds (internally), create our reality or our lives (externally). It took me many years of self-study, learning meditation, reading books, going to study groups, taking courses, and attending spiritual conferences, workshops, and non-traditional churches, to grasp, and then incorporate into my belief system that whatever I focus on or think about is what I get in life. Said another way, everything that happens or that I have in my life is a product of my thoughts, consciously or subconsciously. Even mindless chatter, which I seem to do much of the time, calculating, judging, assessing, planning, scheming, wishing for, complaining about, lamenting, or weeping about, ends up manifesting or showing up in a physical form, i.e., an event or condition of some kind. In a nutshell, all our creations come from thoughts, or the mind.

According to Quantum physics, nothing, no-thing, really exists. Dr. Wayne Dyer, who wrote many self-help books, says if you look through a powerful enough microscope, solid matter boils down to nothing visible or tangible, like this book or that leaf or those stones … or that person. Shakti Gawain, whose book Creative Visualization I read early in my spiritual journey, says that the physical universe is not matter but energy, a force or essence. She says that things only appear to be solid and separate. We are all
