Before I learned to read, I knew my astrological sign; by the time I was five, I had learned the medicinal uses of herbs from my aunt Edie. PRACTICAL MAGIC: PHASES OF THE MOON

Any good witch knows that the best ingredients can be found in your kitchen or backyard. Many plants now thought of as weeds have great healing powers and magical properties. Most of this book’s herbs and essential oils have become quite commonplace. With the plethora of aromatherapy products now available, most oil essences and scented candles can be bought commercially. For the more unusual ingredients, try your local health food market, herbalist, or metaphysical store.

Performing a spell at the optimal time in the lunar cycle will maximize your power. As you read the spells in this book, keep this elemental magic in mind:

Each lunar cycle begins with a new phase when the moon lies between the sun and the earth, so the illuminated side cannot be seen from Earth. The moon gradually waxes until it has moved to the opposite side of the earth. When the moon has reached the far side of the earth, its lit side faces us in the full moon phase. It then begins to wane until it reaches the new moon phase again. The cycle takes a month, during which the moon orbits the earth. To determine the sun sign governing the moon, you will need a celestial guide or almanac.

CHAPTER ONE

SELF-LOVE INVOCATION

It all starts with self-love. Here is an old saying: If you can’t love yourself, how the heck can you love somebody else? This admittedly cheeky statement holds a lot of truth, but the bottom line is everything starts with self-love: your health, self-esteem, relationships, success, and happiness. Even if you had a less-than-ideal childhood, it is never too late to esteem yourself and watch as everything makes a turn for the better quickly. Making a daily ritual of this will weave this strand of personal empowerment into your life and make sure it is growing and strong.

Begin by sitting quietly, taking relaxed, slow, deep breaths, and wishing yourself happiness. After sitting quietly, begin to speak this mantra aloud:

May I be happy.

May I be well.

May I be safe.

May I be peaceful.

May I be at ease.

May I be content.

Continue this practice until you feel full of self-love and compassion. When you are ready to move to the next phase, think of another person you would like to give happiness and unconditional love to. Send the love through your meditation and saying these words:

May you be happy.

May you be well.

May you be safe.

May you be peaceful.

May you be filled with contentment.

CREATING A LOVE GODDESS ALTAR

Make room for love in your life and home! To prepare for new relationships and deepen the expression of feeling and intensity of your lovemaking, create a center from which to renew your erotic spirit—your altar. Here, you can concentrate your energy, clarify your intentions, and make wishes come true! If you already have an altar, incorporate special elements to enhance your sex life. As always, the more you use your altar, the more powerful your spells will be.

Your altar can sit on a low table, big box, or any flat surface you decorate and dedicate to magic. One friend of mine has her sex altar at the head of her bed.

Begin by purifying the space with a sage smudge stick—a bundle of sage that you burn as you pass it around the space. Then cover your altar with a large, red, silky-smooth piece of fabric. Place two red candles at the center of your altar, then place a soulmate crystal in the far-right corner. Soulmate or twinned crystals are any crystals that formed together. They are available at metaphysical stores.

Anoint your candles with jasmine and neroli oil. Keep the incense you think is the sexiest on your altar as well. I love peach and amber musk, which I love to smell. Your sex altar is also a place you can keep sex toys you want to imbue with magic. Place fresh Casablanca lilies in a vase, and change them the minute they begin to fade. Lilies are heralded as exotic and erotic flowers prized for their seductive scent.

ETERNAL LOVE ALTAR: DEDICATE YOUR SACRED SPACE

Here, at your magical power source, you can sanctify your love. Collect your tools, meaningful symbols, and erotic iconography, and prepare for the sacred rituals of love.

Supplies:

•  Red and pink candles

•  Incense

•  Victorian violet and rose essential oils

Directions:

1.  Light the candles and incense and dab the essential oils between your breasts, near your heart.

2.  Speak aloud:

I light the flame of desire,

I fan the flame of passion,

Each candle I burn is a wish

And I come to you as a witch.

My lust will never wane.

I desire and I will be desired.
