    PREFACE

In fact, the Foreign Intelligence Service of Russia (BVR) can be compared to an anthill, into which its inhabitants drag everything that can be useful for its well-being and security. The only difference is that these ants are sometimes many thousands of kilometers from their home. And this orchestra is not conducted by the Queen Mother, but by the same ant who, by the will of fate, was thrown to the very top of this tightly structured organization. And to envy the high position of this ant is a thankless task, given the enormous responsibility multiplied by the practical lack of free time and personal life.

This is also where the comparison with the anthill ends, because its efficiency and utility of existence is evaluated by a completely different ant, which determines the course of action of perhaps hundreds, perhaps several hundreds of the same anthills, ensuring prosperity. and the security of the entire community of the motley nation.

Intellect has honed its work style over many years, a unique code of internal relations and traditions has developed. However, this organization cannot be called ossified and arch-conservative either, time itself forces you to constantly keep your finger on the pulse of events and maybe one step ahead of these events. However, the high professionalism, sense of duty and readiness for self-sacrifice of the majority of employees, who devoted their lives to protecting the security of our Motherland - Russia, always remain unchanged and, I hope, will remain.

Dedicated to veterans and active duty foreign intelligence service personnel.

    ***

A dark hall in which only one place is illuminated - the wall on which the BVR coat of arms hangs; on the background of this light spot, a man is standing in a chair. The man announces the scout oath in a solemn voice:

"Joining the ranks of the Foreign Intelligence Service, I solemnly swear to spare no effort and, if necessary, my life, protecting the security of my Motherland.

I swear to use all my knowledge and experience to obtain information that will contribute to the welfare of Russia. I swear on honor to uphold the traditions of the Bureau and continue to work to strengthen its strength, power and influence. I swear to obey the orders of my superiors without question and to keep secret any information that comes to my knowledge as a result of my work. I swear to work with courage and honor for the honor of my Motherland and the Russian people!

    Chapter 1

Headquarters of the Russian Foreign Intelligence Service, Office of the Bureau Director. A spacious and bright office that can comfortably accommodate 20 people, but in case of urgent need, up to 30 people. But according to the established practice, this room does not tolerate excitement and crowds, decisions are made here that require a thoughtful approach, based on the analysis of a huge amount of information that is gradually collected from all corners of the world. Any reckless decision at this table is inevitably associated with failure, behind which lies the distorted destinies of certain people and the tarnished face of not only the intelligentsia, but the entire Russian state.

There are only two people in the office - the director of BVR and his first deputy.

    - Comrade director, according to incoming information, the Americans have approached our agent Milvus, there is a high probability that he will be discovered. The source himself is nervous and is praying for his safety," reported the deputy director.

    - What do you think about this?

Given the merits of Milvus, the value of the information he provided, as well as the inevitable negative international resonance associated with his possible disclosure, I think it is time to highlight the hero. We will provide him with a comfortable and unknown old age," the deputy reported without hesitation, apparently anticipating such a question in advance.

    — You want to take it out!? I understand that for the information we received from him, our country should build him a house by the Black Sea of pure gold, and in this house you and I will spread red and black caviar on his sandwiches every morning! - the director retorted.

The director, always balanced and not prone to negative emotions, clearly has his own opinion on this matter. And this, in fact, guarantees with a hundred percent probability that his own decision will be accepted, if there are no particularly convincing counterarguments in the opponent's stock.

The director gets up, goes to the window, then turns and looks at the portrait of the president above the chair.

We have a rare case where technology borrowed without permission was implemented faster than the technology of the person we stole it from. And this is not only because of the effectiveness of our military-industrial complex, but also because Milvus on the other side is slowing down its development process! — The director leisurely sits down in the visitor's chair, opposite the deputy, You understand very well that the systems that have taken on combat duties have made it possible to level the scales and cool the hot heads of our Main Partners. And finally, the commander-in-chief, pointing his finger at the portrait, could show these gentlemen of low social responsibility with gestures everything he thought of them!

Sergei Yevgenevich, I'm not against, but there are big risks... the deputy does not have time to finish, because the director interrupts him.

    - Listen, Dima! Have you forgotten where we work!? The risks are high!?... - here he deliberately takes a short pause so that the interlocutor understands the meaning of each word he utters. — And the fact that Milvus is not the last person in the corporation that is the Pentagon's main supplier of topics of interest to our military-industrial complex. And the fact that the defense budget in the states is twenty times larger than ours! And in the near future, these scoundrels will again come up with some dirty trick to try to redraw the world map again, and of course, without considering our interests! - finished the director.

    - Comrades director, the task is clear. Let's use all the necessary forces and means! I think this operation will require His own sanction! - nods to the portrait.

    – On Friday, the Security Council will grant you a sanction! I will report personally. Connect everything you have: illegal immigrants, residences, technicians, money, but let the Milvus sit where they are now for the next five to ten years and earn a living for themselves and their children with hard work, to have a comfortable old age!

We will immediately start developing the operation, tomorrow I will report on the action plan, said the deputy.

    - Come on, Comrade General, don't let me down.

The deputy gets up and goes to the door, the director stops him.

    - Dmitry!

    - I'm listening, comrade director!

If the Americans discover this mole, then you and I will write the darkest page in the history of our office.

Perhaps only BVR has developed a special spirit of communication over the many years of its existence, which delicately borders between formal and informal manners. And despite this fine line, every employee knows exactly when, how and with whom to switch to a more friendly way of talking. And now, having received a specific, more than serious task, the moment has come when the official intensity can be slightly reduced and switched to friendly communication and subtle humor, which distinguishes the Bureau from some other departments, including law enforcement agencies:

Something tells me not this time. They will win the battle, of course, but we will fight to win the war!

An approving smile flashes across the headmaster's face and he waves a friendly hand to the deputy.

The deputy leaves the office, closes the door behind him and confidently walks towards his room. It is from this moment that his brain activates its full potential, hundreds of successful operations that have already been completed are retrieved from memory, punctures are not forgotten, the plan of the operative measure is already vaguely outlined and the necessary forces and means are determined. Or maybe this activity has never decreased, but only occasionally picked up or slowed down!? In any case, this time another big game of chess is being played, in which a very, very important element is at stake - the safety of the Motherland and the people living in its territory.

    Chapter 2

It cannot be said that little attention is paid to the BVR headquarters in terms of its development and modernization, but still here and there there are offices filled with the smell of old housing, quite worn furniture, with a lack of air. conditioning and repair. And it is not at all necessary for the boss to always have a freshly renovated office, but for the subordinate to have a workplace that remains without repair, it happens that the boss, like his subordinates, steadfastly waits for his turn for years. Gleb Mihailovic Listvennyi, the deputy head of one department of the office, works in exactly such a room, not even on a large area.

Gleb's biography is no different from the biographies of hundreds of workers like him. One often gets the impression that they are all written from the same copy and differ only in different universities that BVR candidates graduate from before joining the Office. Of course, with all the similarities in the biographies, behind them are completely different people with different characters, united by a common sense of pride and respect that arises in their hearts due to the awareness of involvement in one of the most closed and mysterious structures. in Russia.

By the beginning of the fifties, Gleb had already gone on several long-distance business trips, where he faithfully fulfilled the duties assigned to him. Although it is not very large, it has concrete results in its work and is generally characterized by leadership. Like many other employees, he is counting on his next promotion. Gleb is a funny fellow and a laugher, the soul of any company, he is happy to brighten up the sometimes monotonous work of his fellows with daily funny stories and portions of anecdotes.

In Gleb's office, two new employees are sitting by the wall - graduates of the BVR Foreign Intelligence Academy assigned to him. In accordance with the established traditions and also in accordance with his duties, Gleb conducts an introductory conversation with young people and at the same time examines the characters of newly arrived employees in his characteristic manner. In the middle of the conversation, his old friend, fellow student at the academy and at the same time the head of the same department, Nikolai Yevgenevich Boreyev, enters the office.

    - Shalom-alaikum Gleb Mihailovic! Here's a report on the last request for you," he places the folder on the table. - Didn't you interfere? I see you have a meeting here!

    - No, no, that you are Nikolai Yevgenevich! You are just in time, I am conducting an introductory interview with the new employees in our department. Have a seat, I will be happy to receive your help.

Nikolai sits down on an empty chair and looks at the young people with interest. Gleb continues the interrupted conversation and addresses them again:

    — The following operational situation: you are station personnel, you have a good contact at the intelligence penetration facility, and that contact is female. She is ready to develop a relationship, but in return she demands intimacy because she has soft feelings for you. Your actions?

The new employees hesitate, but after a while one of them answers:

    — Gleb Mihailovic, despite such specific conditions of the task, according to the acquired knowledge, we are ready to carry out such missions. But with your permission, I am married and I would like to make a request - is it possible to involve single employees in this type of activity?

Gleb turns to Nikolay with surprised grimaces:

    - No, well, look, Nikolay Yevgenevich! He just arrived and he's already asking to go scouting for him! - turns again to the newly minted security guards. - And if all the operational personnel of the station are married, then how are we going to do intelligence!? And then
