Homo Imago Dei A Biblical Response to the Future of Humanity - Felipe Chavarro Polanía
Introduction
In his thought-provoking book Homo Deus: A Brief History of Tomorrow,
Yuval Noah Harari presents a vision of the future where humanity, having largely conquered the challenges of famine, pestilence, and war, turns its focus towards achieving godlike status through technological advancements. Harari's work raises critical questions about the trajectory of human progress and the role of technology in shaping our destiny. As Christians, it is essential that we examine these ideas through the lens of biblical truth, seeking to understand how God's Word speaks to the challenges and opportunities of our rapidly evolving world.
The purpose of this book, Homo Imago Dei: A Biblical Response to the Future of Humanity,
is to provide a thoughtful, faith-based perspective on the issues raised in Homo Deus.
We will draw upon the wisdom of Scripture, the insights of renowned theologians, tech experts, and scholars from various fields, including artificial intelligence, bioengineering, and data science. By engaging with Harari's ideas from a biblical worldview, we aim to equip believers with the knowledge and discernment needed to navigate the complexities of our technological age while remaining grounded in the eternal truths of God's Word.
As we embark on this exploration, we must consider critical questions: What does it mean to be human in an age of rapid technological change? How do we maintain our identity as beings created in the image of God (Imago Dei) while embracing the potential benefits of technological progress? And ultimately, how can we use technology in a way that honors God and advances His Kingdom?
Dr. John Lennox, Professor of Mathematics at the University of Oxford and a prominent Christian apologist, emphasizes the importance of engaging with these questions from a biblical perspective. In his book 2084: Artificial Intelligence and the Future of Humanity,
Lennox argues that as we consider the rapid advances in technology, particularly in the field of artificial intelligence, it is crucial that we do so with a clear understanding of what it means to be human, as defined by Scripture
(Lennox, 2020). This understanding, rooted in the concept of Imago Dei, should guide our approach to technological development and its implications for our future.
Throughout this book, we will grapple with these questions and more, providing a balanced, biblically-informed perspective that acknowledges the legitimate concerns raised by Harari while offering hope and guidance rooted in the timeless wisdom of Scripture. Our goal is not to demonize technology or promote a Luddite mentality but rather to encourage discernment, responsible engagement, and a steadfast commitment to the lordship of Christ in every aspect of our lives, including our relationship with technology.
The renowned theologian D.A. Carson notes, The challenge for the Christian is to maintain a biblical worldview while engaging with the ideas and technologies of the modern world
(Carson, 2018). This book aims to help believers meet that challenge, providing a roadmap for navigating the future with faith, wisdom, and a deep sense of purpose.
As we proceed, it is essential to consider the insights of experts from various fields who have grappled with the implications of emerging technologies. Dr. Michael Burdett, a Research Fellow at the University of Nottingham and author of Eschatology and the Technological Future,
suggests that Christians must engage in a thoughtful and discerning manner with the promises and perils of technological advancement, always maintaining a strong grounding in biblical truth and a commitment to human flourishing
(Burdett, 2015).
Similarly, Dr. Rosalind Picard, Director of the Affective Computing Research Group at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and a Christian scholar, emphasizes the need for a holistic, faith-based approach to technological development. In her article Affective Computing and the Imago Dei,
Picard argues that as we develop increasingly sophisticated technologies, particularly those that interact with and shape human emotions and experiences, we must do so with a deep understanding of God's design for humanity and a commitment to using these tools in ways that honor Him and promote the well-being of His creation
(Picard, 2018).
Let us proceed with open minds and prayerful hearts, trusting in the guidance of the Holy Spirit as we seek to understand and apply God's truth in an age of unprecedented change. May our exploration of these vital issues bring glory to God and equip His people to live as faithful witnesses in a world that desperately needs the hope and transformation that only Christ can bring.
––––––––
1. How can we discern between the beneficial aspects of technological progress and the potential dangers of pursuing godlike status through technology?
2. In what ways might our understanding of what it means to be created in the image of God (Imago Dei) inform our approach to human enhancement technologies?
3. As Christians, how can we engage with the rapidly advancing fields of AI, bioengineering, and data science in a way that honors God and promotes human flourishing?
4. How can we cultivate a biblical worldview that enables us to critically evaluate the claims and promises of emerging technologies, while also recognizing their potential to address pressing human needs and challenges?
5. What role should the Church play in shaping the conversation around the ethical and spiritual implications of technological advancement, and how can we ensure that our voice is heard and respected in the public square?
As we consider the first question, discerning between the beneficial aspects of technological progress and the potential dangers of pursuing godlike status through technology, it is essential to recognize that not all advancements are inherently problematic. Many technological developments have the potential to alleviate suffering, improve quality of life, and address pressing global challenges. However, when the pursuit of technological progress becomes an end in itself, disconnected from a biblical understanding of human purpose and identity, it can lead to hubris and a distorted view of our place in creation.
Dr. Douglas Estes, Associate Professor of New Testament and Practical Theology at South University, suggests that Christians must approach technological advancement with a spirit of discernment, carefully evaluating each development in light of biblical principles and the ultimate goal of bringing glory to God
(Estes, 2019). This discernment involves acknowledging the potential benefits of technology while also recognizing the temptation to elevate human achievement above our dependence on God.
Regarding the second question, our understanding of what it means to be created in the image of God (Imago Dei) should profoundly inform our approach to human enhancement technologies. The biblical concept of Imago Dei affirms the inherent dignity, value, and purpose of every human being, regardless of their physical or cognitive capacities. As such, any pursuit of human enhancement must be grounded in a commitment to the sanctity of human life and the preservation of human dignity.
Dr. Brent Waters, Jerre L. and Mary Joy Stead Professor of Christian Social Ethics at Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary, argues that the Christian vision of human flourishing is rooted in the redemptive work of Christ, not in the pursuit of technological perfection
(Waters, 2016). While certain forms of human enhancement may be permissible or even beneficial, such as medical interventions to restore health and function, we must be cautious about embracing enhancements that fundamentally alter human nature or create unjust social hierarchies.
As we explore the third question, engaging with the rapidly advancing fields of AI, bioengineering, and data science in a way that honors God and promotes human flourishing, it is crucial to approach these disciplines with a spirit of humility, wisdom, and compassion. Christians working in these fields have a unique opportunity to shape the trajectory of technological development by bringing biblical values and ethical considerations to the forefront of the conversation.
Dr. Derek Schuurman, Professor of Computer Science at Calvin University and author of Shaping a Digital World: Faith, Culture, and Computer Technology,
emphasizes the importance of developing technology in a way that respects human dignity, promotes justice, and fosters stewardship of creation
(Schuurman, 2013). By engaging with these fields from a Christian perspective, we can work towards developing technologies that serve the common good and align with God's purposes for humanity.
To cultivate a biblical worldview that enables us to critically evaluate the claims and promises of emerging technologies, as posed in the fourth question, we must immerse ourselves in the study of Scripture and the rich theological tradition of the Church. By grounding our perspective in biblical truth, we can develop a robust framework for assessing the merits and limitations of technological advancements.
Dr. Jacob Shatzer, Assistant Professor of Theological Studies at Union University and author of Transhumanism and the Image of God,
suggests that Christians must develop a deep understanding of the biblical narrative, from creation to redemption to consummation, in order to properly evaluate the worldview assumptions underlying transhumanist and techno-progressivist ideologies
(Shatzer, 2019). This biblical grounding enables us to recognize the value of technology as a tool for serving God and others, while also resisting the temptation to view it as a means of achieving a posthuman future.
Finally, addressing the fifth question, the Church has a vital role to play in shaping the conversation around the ethical and spiritual implications of technological advancement. As the body of Christ, we are called to be salt and light in the world, engaging with the pressing issues of our time from a perspective of faith and moral clarity.
Dr. C. Ben Mitchell, Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs at Union University, argues that "the Church must be a prophetic voice in the public square, speaking truth to power and advocating for
