    Chapter one

    Forbidden Encounter

The sun had just begun to set over the blood-soaked battlefield when Lyra Faelyn heard the cries for help. Exhausted from hours of tending to the wounded, she wiped the sweat from her brow and hurried toward the source of the anguished voice. As she navigated the sea of fallen soldiers, Lyra’s mind raced with the memories of her childhood in the lower districts of the city, where she had first discovered her gift for healing magic.

Growing up, Lyra had witnessed firsthand the stark disparities between the classes — the wealthy nobility living in opulence while the common folk struggled to make ends meet. It was this injustice that had driven her to use her abilities to help those in need, regardless of their station. But as she approached the wounded nobleman lying amidst the chaos, Lyra felt a flicker of doubt. Would he even accept her aid, or would he turn her away, like so many of his kind had done before?

Alastair Devereux, captain of the king’s guard, lay in a pool of his own blood, his once-resplendent armor now dented and stained crimson. As Lyra knelt beside him, her hands already glowing with the soft, amber light of her healing magic, Alastair’s piercing blue eyes met hers, a mixture of pain and surprise flickering within their depths.

You’re a healer, he said, his voice strained. But you’re not one of the army’s medics.

Lyra smiled wryly, masking the unease that coiled within her. No, I’m not. But I couldn’t just stand by while people suffered.

As she began to work her magic, Lyra felt Alastair’s gaze upon her, studying her with an intensity that made her heart race. She knew that he must be questioning her presence here, a lowborn woman tending to a nobleman’s wounds. But to her surprise, when he spoke again, his voice held no trace of disdain or suspicion.

What’s your name? he asked, his tone gentle, almost curious.

Lyra, she replied softly, focusing on the deep gash across his chest. Lyra Faelyn.

Lyra, Alastair repeated, as if testing the sound of her name on his tongue. I owe you my life, Lyra Faelyn.

His words sent a shiver down her spine, and Lyra felt a sudden, inexplicable connection to this man–a sense of kinship that transcended the barriers of class and status. But as quickly as it had come, the moment passed, and she forced herself to concentrate on the task at hand.

As she worked to knit Alastair’s flesh back together, Lyra couldn’t help but wonder what had brought him to this point–what battles he had fought, both on the field and within himself. She knew that the life of a nobleman was not as easy as many believed, with constant pressure to uphold family honor and meet the expectations of their station.

You’re lucky, she murmured, her brow furrowing in concentration. A few inches to the left, and this would have been a mortal wound.

Alastair let out a short, mirthless laugh. Lucky. Not the word I’d used to describe today.

There was a bitterness in his voice that surprised Lyra, a hint of the weight that he carried on his shoulders. She found herself wanting to know more about him–to understand the man beneath the armor and the title.

What happened out there? she asked softly, her eyes still fixed on her work.

Alastair was silent for a long moment, and Lyra feared that she had overstepped. But when he finally spoke, his voice was low and haunted.

We were outnumbered, he said, his gaze distant. The enemy had us surrounded. I watched so many of my men fall, cut down like wheat before the scythe. I thought I would join them.

Lyra’s heart ached for him, for the pain and loss that he had endured. She knew all too well the toll that battle could take on the soul.

I’m sorry, she whispered, her voice thick with emotion. I can’t imagine what that must have been like.

Alastair’s eyes met hers, and for a fleeting instant, Lyra saw a vulnerability there — a glimpse of the man behind the mask of nobility.

Thank you, he said, his voice rough with unspoken gratitude. For your kindness, and for your skill.

Lyra felt a flush of warmth at his words, but she quickly tamped it down. She couldn’t afford to let herself be drawn in by his charm, not when there was still so much work to be done.

As she finished her healing, Lyra sat back on her heels, the glow of her magic fading. There, she said, a note of satisfaction in her voice. You’ll need rest, but you should make a full recovery.

Alastair pushed himself up on his elbows, marveling at the unblemished skin where his wounds had been. Incredible, he breathed. I’ve never seen healing magic like that before.

Lyra shrugged, a small smile playing at the corners of her mouth. It’s a gift, she said simply. One that I’ve worked hard to cultivate.

She didn’t mention the years of study and practice that had gone into honing her abilities, or the sacrifices she had
