    TREASURES OF THE FIELD

The news had reached from the west back to the east that gold had been discovered again, this time in Nevada. Everyone who ever had the thought of becoming the next millionaire was now thinking how he could up root himself and follow his dream to being that one. Gold has a way of changing a person’s life. Just seeing it, touching it and even the thought of it makes some people have a complete change of themselves altogether.

Even here in California you would think that the gold had been discovered here the way people were acting. Some were already walking away from families, farms, ranches, and even well established businesses. People were willing to leave it all in search for this precious yellow dust. With all the up roar about the finding of gold the town was filled with all sorts of people and the excitement so rampant throughout the area. You would think that the men had already found their share the way they were acting. People were leaving by the dozens and mining equipment was becoming hard to find and at a higher cost than it had ever been before.

The prospectors that had already gone had bought up most of the better mining equipment for their excited journey. Things were already getting out of hand for some of the would be miners. They were arguing with anyone who was more equip than they were and some were even trying to repair old broken down wagons to haul their equipment on. The make shift saloons that had been erected up and down the heavy worn streets were doing a great business with the folks that were coming in to town. They weren’t caring about how much talk that was going on about finding gold they just wanted to sell more whiskey to any who had the money. Their gold was in the bottle.

Men were gambling away their hard earn money to the gamblers who knew how and when to take the advantage of them. Some of the men never got no farther than the make shift towns before they had lost all their savings and trying to find how to return home with some respect with nothing to show for all their lost.

California was a thriving state and had many people that had paid a great price to be there and help build it was now the same folks now willing to leave and follow their dream with many of the others. After you left the city heading east there was only one road out of town heading toward the gold fields and you didn’t have to go very far before it turned into a trail. The trail was treacherous but well-traveled by many who were determined to be the next one to strike it rich.

The men were willing to work long hours seven days a week, digging in the dirt, breaking rocks in and on the mountains didn’t seem to bother them who came searching for the yellow substance that would change their lives forever, if they were fortunate enough to find it. They spent days, weeks, even years, panning the streams, digging in the hills around them hoping to find gold. They worked at it for so long till many of the men, when they did quit for the day could hardly stand up straight. Some even walked with a bowed back. Some had been gone so long that they had forgotten their family they left back home. Men had aged in so many ways that they themselves did not realize just how much.

These two men, coming from California were loaded down with a heavy load were no different from the others, who had left everything to follow a dream of being the next millionaire, maybe becoming a great cattle Barron or even being a part of building great cities with schools and churches. They both carried fire arms, mostly to help with the food supply by killing fresh meat along the way. One had a long barrel single shot rifle he carried in his right hand, and the other one had a colt 45 pistol he carried in a handmade cow hide holster he wore on his left side with the butt of the gun pointing toward his right hand, making it easy for him to grab it quickly if need be. He was no gun gunslinger but, he could draw it out pretty quick if need be.

Their journey was long and tiresome the two men spoke very little to each other saving all their energy they could for the next mile a head. All along the trail you could see many items that had been left behind by the prospectors who had made a bad decision packing for their journey. What they thought they wanted to carry and what they actually needed was a different matter when they got out on the trail. These two men were trying to make their way to the train station in Carson City, Nevada. Their faces were stained with a deep reddish brown from the baking sun, showed their determination each one had for the adventurous journey they had embarked on.

    *************************

It’s 1858, Nevada had yet to join the Union along with many other states, but she stood proud with her tall Rocky Mountains reaching toward the heavens above. This rocky mountain state was a land of unusual beauty, color, and variety of scenery. Great rocky plateaus gleam brilliant red in the sunshine. The alkaline salt flats glisten red for miles across the desert. On the mountaintops and slopes were covered white with snow, and the evergreen trees were pushing up out of them. It made the mountains look like giant Christmas trees decorated for Christmas.

Down in the valley the flowers were in full bloom. The wild flowers of cactus, yucca, and sagebrush plants were bending their heads in reverence to the coming of spring. The gray green sagebrush gave Nevada another nickname, THE SAGE BRUSH STATE. You could see flowers just about anywhere they were spread out everywhere. All these made the state of Nevada a very beautiful state regardless of the many high mountains and dry deserts that seemed to want to engulf it.

The beginning of the year had started out to be another year of mixed temperatures; it was varying from 110-120 degrees in the deserts, to below zero degrees at times on top of the mountains. The
