    The Inheritance

The rain pounded against the windshield as Liam Blackthorne navigated the winding, neglected road leading to Blackthorne Hall. The dense, misty forest seemed to close in around him, the ancient trees twisting and reaching out like gnarled fingers. Liam gripped the steering wheel tighter, his knuckles turning white as he peered through the gloom.

It had been years since he’d last seen the ancestral home of the Blackthorne family. Memories of his childhood visits were hazy, distorted by time and the weight of his father’s mysterious disappearance. Now, with the unexpected news of his estranged grandfather’s death and the even more surprising inheritance of the manor, Liam found himself drawn back to uncover the secrets that had haunted him for so long.

As he drove, Liam’s thoughts drifted to his life back in the city. He had always been a loner, throwing himself into his work as a journalist to escape the emptiness he felt inside. His few close friends had expressed concern when he announced his sudden departure, but Liam had brushed off their worries with a forced smile. He knew that this journey was something he had to do alone.

Liam’s mind wandered to his mother, Amelia, who had passed away when he was just a teenager. She had always been a source of comfort and strength, but her untimely death had left a void in his life that he had never quite been able to fill. Even now, years later, Liam could still feel the ache of her absence.

As he rounded a bend, Blackthorne Hall loomed into view, its Victorian facade emerging from the mist like a specter from the past. The towering spires and intricate details of the Gothic architecture seemed to whisper of grandeur and foreboding, while the crumbling stone and overgrown ivy hinted at years of neglect and decay.

Liam parked his car on the gravel drive, the crunch of the stones beneath his feet echoing through the eerie stillness. He made his way up the cracked stone steps to the massive oak door, the weight of the brass knocker cold and heavy in his hand.

The door swung open with a creak, revealing a dimly lit foyer. Shadows danced across the faded tapestries and dusty chandeliers, while the musty scent of age and neglect hung heavy in the air. Liam stepped inside, a shiver running down his spine as the door closed behind him with a resounding thud.

Hello? he called out, his voice swallowed by the oppressive silence. Is anyone here?

For a moment, there was no response. Then a floorboard creaked behind him. Liam spun around, his heart racing.

There, in the shadows, stood an old man. His weathered face was lined with age, his pale eyes glinting in the dim light. He was dressed in a black suit that hung loosely on his thin frame, a silver-handled cane clutched in his gnarled hand.

You must be Liam, the man said, his voice gravelly with age. I’ve been expecting you.

Liam frowned, taking a step back. Who are you?

The old man chuckled, a dry, humorless sound. I am Silas Blackthorne, the caretaker of this estate. I have served your family for longer than you’ve been alive.

Liam studied Silas warily. There was something unsettling about the caretaker, a darkness that seemed to cling to him like a second skin. I didn’t know there was anyone still living here.

Silas shrugged, leaning heavily on his cane. I am bound to this place, just as your family is bound to the curse that haunts it.

A chill ran down Liam’s spine at the mention of the curse. He had heard whispers of it growing up, dark tales of madness and death that had plagued the Blackthorne line for generations. But he had always dismissed them as nothing more than ghost stories, the ramblings of superstitious minds.

Now, standing in the halls of Blackthorne Manor, Liam couldn’t shake the feeling that there was more to the stories than he had ever believed.

Silas led Liam deeper into the manor, the floorboards creaking beneath their feet. The walls were lined with portraits of Liam’s ancestors, their eyes seeming to follow him as he passed. The air grew colder as they descended into the bowels of the house, the shadows deepening with each step.

Finally, they reached a heavy wooden door, its surface carved with strange symbols that made Liam’s skin crawl. Silas produced an ancient-looking key from his pocket and unlocked the door, the hinges groaning in protest as it swung open.

Inside was a library, its walls lined with towering shelves of leather-bound books. A massive fireplace dominated one wall, the charred remains of a long-forgotten fire scattered across the hearth. The room was illuminated by a single window, its grimy glass filtering into the weak light of the overcast sky.

Silas gestured for Liam to enter, a knowing smile playing at the corners of his mouth. You’ll find what you’re looking for in here, he said cryptically. But be warned, the truth is rarely a comfort.

With that, the old caretaker turned and limped away, his cane tapping a rhythmic beat against the floorboards. Liam watched him go, a sense of unease settling in the pit of his stomach.

Shaking off his trepidation, Liam turned his attention to the library. He ran his fingers along the spines of the books, marveling at the sheer volume of knowledge contained within. Many of the titles were in languages he couldn’t read, their covers adorned with strange symbols and arcane imagery.

As he explored the shelves, a glint of silver caught Liam’s eye. He reached out and pulled a small, leather-bound journal from its resting place, its cover embossed with the Blackthorne family crest.

With trembling hands, Liam opened the journal, his heart pounding in his chest. The pages were yellowed with age, the ink faded and smudged. But as he read, the words seemed to come alive, painting a vivid picture of the past.

The journal belonged to his great-grandmother, Evelyn Blackthorne. In it, she spoke of a passionate affair with a mysterious stranger, a man whose name was never mentioned. She wrote of stolen moments and forbidden love, of whispered promises and dark secrets.

But as Liam delved deeper into the journal, the tone began to change. Evelyn’s words became frantic, tinged with fear and desperation. She spoke of a curse, a dark force that had haunted the Blackthorne family for generations.

The curse is born of betrayal, Evelyn wrote, her handwriting shaky and uneven. It feeds on the sins of our past, growing stronger with each generation. I fear that my own actions have only served to deepen its hold on our family.

The final pages of the journal were torn and stained, the words barely legible. But Liam could make out a single, chilling phrase, repeated over and over again: Beware the blood moon.

As he closed the journal, a sudden gust of wind tore through the library, slamming the window shut with a bang. Liam jumped, his heart racing. He spun around, half-expecting to see Silas or some other ghostly figure lurking in the shadows. But he was alone, the only sound the howling of the wind outside.
