The Wizard The Girl And The Unicorn’s Magic - Kevin Cooper

    Preface

The wizard stands on the pinnacle of the highest mountain looking down upon the world through his looking-glass. He lives on the mountain like a hermit, yet he is anything but. The mountain is perfectly located right in the middle of the land of Geo and is so high that its peak rises above the clouds.

He stands on the pinnacle at the beginning of every year to see where he is needed and what work has to be done in the land. His real purpose is to keep the land safe so that all its inhabitants can live in peace and harmony.

The simple folk, the goblins and even the trolls do not know the wizard’s real purpose. In fact, they don’t know much about him at all. They have never even seen him do any magic of any sort. He just usually seems to show up when there is some sort of discord going on between the three races, shares a few words and, Bobby's your aunty; problem solved. This is just the way the wizard likes it.

His tasks are mostly menial and have been for many a year. Just the previous year, he came and looked upon the surrounding countryside of a small village and saw that a group of goblins had come out of the mountains, and they were terrorising a farmer.

Most of the human inhabitants of Geo are quite simple folk. Being simple folk, they don’t know what to do to help the poor farmer and don’t even think about asking for help of any sort. Therefore, they just comfort him with words saying that the goblins will not stay around long. They will miss their mountains and soon head back.

The wizard doesn’t want to cause the farmer any unnecessary stress by addressing him first, so he decides to go and reason with the goblin leader before speaking to him.

Goblins are not completely unreasonable creatures and for the most part they are quite harmless. They usually keep to their mountains, but once in a while, they stray away from them inadvertently while larking about. They mean no harm, but they like to have fun. Since they are not the most sentimental creatures, their fun can usually be at the expense of others and sometimes they tend to get a bit out of control.

In this particular instance, the goblins had done just that. They had been chasing and clobbering each other with their clubs when they strayed from their mountain. At the time, a simple farmer was searching for one of his lost sheep and accidentally ran into them as he made his way around a large boulder. He straight away panicked and ran back to his farm waving his arms about and screaming the whole way.

Well, the goblins thought it hilarious and not wanting the fun to stop, plotted together and began to steal the poor farmer’s sheep, but not to keep them. They knew the farmer would search for them again.

As he searched for his sheep, they hid and made sheep noises to lead him in the right direction and find them. Then, just as the farmer’s eyes widened in glee at the sight of his sheep, they jumped out from behind a boulder, waved their arms around and made funny sounds that were a rather poor attempt at mimicking the farmer’s cries the last time he ran back to his farm. Upon seeing them, obviously the simple farmer panicked again and ran off waving his arms around and screaming just as before.

The goblins rolled around in the grass and laughed until their sides ached. When recovered, they guided his sheep back to their fold. So they could do it all again the following day.

It proved to be a simple task for the wizard. He made his way down to the goblins and spoke to the largest one. The largest goblin is usually the one in charge and the wizard most certainly wasn’t wrong on this occasion.

    Morning!

A surprised pause came before the goblin chief responded.

    You’re wizard.

That’s right, how did you know?

You wear big funny hat! Ha! Ha! Ha! Ha! The other goblins join in the laughter to show their approval.

You’re very clever to notice that!

Yeah, Grog is cleverer than silly farmer. Grog, likes him. Silly farmer is funny and makes Grog laugh. Ha, ha, ha, ha!

The other goblins joined in again in unison. We all like silly farmer. Ha, ha, ha, ha!

Oh, I wondered what you were doing so far away from your mountain, says the wizard. He ignores the other goblins.

Tell me, does this farmer find it funny too? I mean, does he laugh with you? I do love it when folk get along so well like that.

Grog nervously wrings his hands together and mumbles something incoherently under his breath.

    Err, what was that?

Grog thinks maybe silly farmer doesn’t like it. He swallows loudly.

    No? Mm!

Grog doesn’t want trouble from wizard or silly farmer. Grog, go home now.

Grog begins to sulkily head back towards the mountains with his head bowed and the others follow him.

I’ll let the farmer know that you are sorry, shall I? the wizard calls after him.

Wizard is cleverer than Grog. Wizard tell farmer. Grog, go home now, Grog calls behind him.

The goblins head back to the mountain, at first in a somewhat sombre mood, but soon the little conversation with the wizard is all forgotten, and they start clobbering each other with their clubs again.

Grog starts the game by clobbering the goblin beside him. You’re it!

As is his wont, the wizard returns to his home on the mountain. His home from the outside is a
