Playing Blind - Melissa Bell
CHAPTER 1
H onestly, Keith! You do realise that being blind does not make a person deaf, dumb or stupid. Of all the people that should understand, I thought it would be my brother.
Sis, this is the first time you’ve ever lived on your own. I don’t understand why it’s such a big deal for you. We are happy to have you stay. Just because Carol and I are getting married, doesn’t mean you have to move out.
Oh, what and listen to the newlywed’s fuck like rabbits? I don’t think so. I like Carol, for you, but I’m not looking to replace mum. I already have you.
Charlie poked at the air in front of her to make her point. I am not a kid anymore Keith. I don’t need to be spoon fed, and for some unknown, fucked up reason, Carol seems to think I do. That’s when she isn’t leaving shit lying around for me to trip over.
She just forgets. I…
Charlie held her hand up to silence him, Oh, and I suppose she just happened to forget last week, when I came home to find the furniture had been rearranged. For fuck’s sake Keith, my shins still have the bruises. I’ve made up my mind. Besides, after I move out you can have your man cave back and Carol can turn my room into a nursery.
Ouch! Too far.
I’ve already signed on the dotted line and the ink is dry.
Charlie blew her overprotective brother a kiss.
What the actual fuck? Who lets a blind chick sign a legal document?
Charlie listened for the direction of Keith’s voice and knew he was standing next to the coffee table with the thing that Carol had bought the previous week. When she was asked what she thought of it, she’d lied, simply saying it was a very interesting piece of art. If Charlie didn’t love her brother as much as she did, she would have asked Carol if it was an ashtray or a paperweight. The ugly ornament was now sitting too close to Charlie’s bad temper. She snatched it up off the table and pulled her arm back like her father had taught her when she was ten and she’d been learning how to throw a baseball. She swung her arm forward and rolled her shoulder towards her brother, using the sound of his movements to locate him in the room.
Charlotte Cassandra Graham! Don’t you dare! Carol bought that for me,
Keith yelled out.
She didn’t have the chance to complete the strike, so instead, she used her sharp tongue, "Oh,
