Dr. Kalthazar held his head in his hands staring in disbelief at the doom analytics dashboard. California was still receiving 22 hours of sunlight a day. Other parts of the world were receiving no light at all. Doom production was more than sufficient.
It has to be old soul flares,
said Dr. Adlai. There’s no other explanation.
Old soul flares?
asked Chuck, pen in hand. Adlai sighed and rolled his eyes. He’d grown tired of answering the intern’s questions.
Old soul flares are like kryptonite for the doom generator,
Dr. Kalthazar explained. When doom, demoralization, and disillusion are sufficient but the generator still experiences issues, it’s an old soul flare. Love, laughter, kindness, art… These things are all soul energy, and any one of them in excess is enough to cause a flare, and thus cause the doom generator to malfunction. And when the generator malfunctions, major cities can lose power for days, even weeks.
Why not just power the generator with old soul flares instead of doom?
