    Chapter 1

    Taab

The truck sped uncontrollably down the street. The driver crouched to head to look in the sky through the windshield. The long dark road had streetlamps posted every half mile. Rory James, the driver, hands shook as he took a puff from his cigarette. He couldn’t believe what he’d just seen only a few miles before, which was a tall man land in the middle of the road. The man had wings. Rory had tried to ram him, but the man took off.

As a gas station approached in the middle of nowhere, Rory didn’t stop. He had to urinate, but he figured he’d hold it until daybreak. There was no way he would stop at night after what he’d seen. He turned his head to look at the back of the truck. The five barrels he hauled were still intact. Finally, Rory turned his attention back to the road after passing the gas station. Again, he drove past a man standing in a long trench coat on the side of the road. Rory pressed the gas to pedal to the floor. The speed on the older pickup truck reached 130 mph. But that’s when the truck started to shake, and smoke emitted from under the hood.

Rory pulled over on the side of the dirt road. He ran out of the car and dove face-first to the ground. He placed his hands over his head. He looked back. The truck didn’t explode. Rory breathed easy. That was until he stood and saw a huge man, who seemingly appeared out of nowhere, standing in front of him.

You’ve done a bad thing, Rory. The huge man straightened his trench coat. No what are we gonna do about it?

Rory began to back up. Wh-wh-who are you?

The name’s Arherial. But most people call me the Bad Angel…or BA for short.

An angel? Rory put his hand over his mouth. So, you know?

Yes, I do, Rory. BA used his finger to straighten his sunglasses. I could have flipped your truck over five miles ago, but I didn’t want to cause a mess.

Listen, angel. Rory started walking and pointed to the back of the truck. Take it. Take it all. I want no problems with any angels.

A little too late for that, Rory. BA followed Rory. But I just want to know where you got it from?

Rory backed up against the truck. B-But he’ll k-kill me.

I’m gonna kill you, Rory…if you don’t tell me what I want to know.

Rory began breathing heavily. He reached and pulled a gun from the small of his back. He pointed the gun at BA. He then quickly put the barrel of the gun under his throat and fired. He blew brains out the back of his head.

Dammit. BA said. There goes another one.

BA snapped his fingers and a fire started in the back of the truck. He picked up Rory’s body and put it in the back of the truck as well. He sprouted his angelic wings and jumped into the air. He hovered above the truck until it exploded. He waited a few more minutes, looked at the sky and took off. As he flew across the night sky, remembered how he’d come to be attached to the current mission he was on.

    Two Months Prior

Walk with me Artherial. Gabriel had said. Look there.

BA stared at the cabin in the wooded area. That’s Cromwell’s place. What of it?

Until this day, Gabriel continued walking. He has been one of your biggest failures and one of your biggest triumphs.

I know, mostly because you never let me forget.

Gabriel smile. Well, what if I told that your time here in Purgatory can end tomorrow?

Really? BA stopped walking. What’s the catch.

I have new mission for you.

BA, still in shock, continued walking with Gabriel toward Kente Cromwell Sr.’s cabin in the woods. Kente was given the cabin when he helped fight side by side with BA, Jericho Caine, and Father Tom Padilla in the war to save the earth from a demon invasion. However, Kente wasn’t granted entrance into paradise when he returned. He still had to serve his time in Purgatory. His reward for helping fight on the side of good was that he wasn’t sent to the underworld for escaping Purgatory, or making the deal that changed him into the Hangman. His stay in Purgatory was different when he came back though. He’d lost his hand in the battle, but he still had to work like everyone else. Giving him his own living quarters was the trade-off.

BA and Gabriel stood just outside Cromwell’s front door. BA didn’t know what to expect. He hadn’t seen Cromwell in a while. He didn’t understand why Gabriel had brought him to the cabin.

Relax. Gabriel said. He’s in the forest. I brought you here to remind you of one of your greatest failures and greatest achievements.

You couldn’t have just told me over coffee?

You know, you’re getting addicted to the earth crap, BA Every time I go to earth to look for you, you’re in a diner drinking that crap.

Ok. Ok. Ok. What’s this all about, brother? I ‘m sure you didn’t come here to tongue-lash me about my caffeine intake.

Your time has come Artherial. Gabriel waved his hand across the air. Your time here in Purgatory has come to an end…if you can complete your next assignment.

And what’s that. BA cocked his head to the side. I thought I’d be here forever.

Our brother, the arch angel Michael, has gone missing.

    Missing?

Yes. Gabriel paced for a bit. The only clue we have to his whereabouts is that this new drug the humans are peddling has his blood mixed in it. And if humans are good for one thing, its humor. They’re calling the drug TAAB, True Arch Angel Blood. One drop makes a barrel of this stuff and its spreading across the lands.

That’s impossible. BA said. There’s no way a human could capture Michael and drain his blood.

Who said it was a human?

BA’s eyes opened wider. What are you saying, brother?

It’s why I met you here, BA. I don’t know who I can trust. I don’t know who’s involved. I don’t’ know if Michael is dead or alive.

What do you want me to do, brother?

We need you to find all this drug and destroy it. By finding who makes the drug, you’ll find Michael. Free him if he’s alive and punish those responsible. Do that, BA and you are done with watching over Purgatory.

BA watched Gabriel fly away. Suddenly, a bushel of logs dropped to the ground. BA turned quickly and saw Cromwell staring at him.

BA, I didn’t expect to see you for a while.

I didn’t come to visit Cromwell. BA clasped his hands behind his back. It was business visit.

And what business do you have out here? Cromwell asked. Is Dorothy and Junior ok?

How many times do you have to be told, Cromwell? You’re dead. They are no longer your concern.

Well, why are you here, BA Cromwell walked closer. You owe me that at least.

I met Gabriel here. Nothing more.

Here? Cromwell’s forehead wrinkled Of all the places you could have me?

    That will be all, Cromwell.

BA sprouted his wings and looked one last time at the disappointment in Cromwell’s face. He launched himself into the sky and flew away.

    Harvey, Illinois

Harvey Illinois had been known for two things. First, they were known for being the poorest town in the new world when the America’s settled. Secondly, they became known for their recovery and eventually one of the richest cites in America. Led back to prominence by their city’s leader, John Harvey, a powerful politician and practicing warlock, Harvey prospered for years even after John’s death. However, the Hangman appeared and wiped all Harvey’s good fortunes away.

Harvey Manor was burned to the ground. The city decided to build a park, Harvey Park, on its land. Even though it is well lit with lamp post every few feet apart, no one visits Harvey Park at night. Very few people can be seen in the park even in the daylight hours. This day was no different. The only people in the park were two strangers. Both were dressed in black suits, white shirts, and black ties. They were white men, but their faces were pale and scarred. They walked until they reached the center of the park. One of them pulled out a magnifying glass. It was red. However, when the sunshine went down through it, the lens reflected a bright yellow spot on the ground. That was only until the sun shined on the spot the two men looked for. When the sun filtered through the lens, a red spot was reflected on the ground.

This is it. One of the men said and pointed at the red spot. That the spot right there.

I’ll go grab the tools. The other man said. We’re in the clear. No one comes around here.

The two men dug a hole where the red spot hit the ground. They dug until they hit a concrete slab underneath the dirt.

    This has to be it.

I agree. Pull out the incantation.

One of the men pulled a folded piece of paper from his back pocket and unfolded it. He placed a ruby amulet on the concrete and read from the paper.

Expergiscimini, et surgere (awake and rise). He raised his arms in the air. Occurret (come forward). Surrecturus sit (arise).

Suddenly, a dark cloud hovered above the park. Lightning could be seen in the clouds. Then the clouds turned red. Lightning could still be seen and struck several trees in the surrounding area. The two men jumped out of the hole they’d built just in time as lightning struck the hole. A repeated stream of electricity stuck the concrete until pieces of the concrete exploded out the hole. The lightning stopped. The two men lay face first on the ground until the ground began rumbling. Finally, grass, dirt and bricks exploded from the ground around the hole and created a bigger hole.

As the smoke and dust settled, a man floated up out of the crater. He wore an all-black dusty black suit. His hair was brunette and long, reaching his buttocks. His nose was long, eyes red, and he had a long beard. His socks were red, and he wore black shoes. His belt was so red, it almost glowed. He motioned his hands to the ground and gently landed on the grass.

I see I am need once more. He said as he motioned for the men to rise. The tide is about to turn it seems.

What makes you say that? One of the men said. Who are you?

I see we’re still using mindless idiots to do our bidding. The man said. My name is Damian Red…Grand Sorcerer of the Underworld, granted power by Hangotuforre himself to rule in his stead.

A sorcerer? One of the men asked. Why would we need a human to do a demon’s work?

Damian pointed at the men. Because you can’t do this. Supertnatet (float).

The two men began to float in the air. Their eyes turned black as they tried to use their demon powers to get back to the ground. However, Damian’s spell was too strong as
