How to Get Nearly Full Scholarships
Win Regardless of Whether You’re in High School or College
Are you confused by the process of getting into a good college and paying for it? Are you the first in your family to try to do this? Does your family, like 42 percent of Americans, have no more than $1,000 in savings , making it impossible (or at least nonsensical), factoring in your current minimum-wage job, to take out $40,000+ in loans to pay for a degree, especially without a guarantee of a job that will earn you enough to pay them back? Do you happen not to be in the top 10 percent of your class as it is, making the idea of getting into any school, let alone a top-tier school, incredibly daunting?
If you can reply yes
to any of these questions, this book is for you, and here’s why: as a high school senior, I could reply yes
to all of them.
I wanted to go to college, and I was completely and utterly bewildered. Out-of-state universities cost $40,000 to $75,000 per year, and local public universities cost only
$7,000 to $12,000. My family lacked savings and know-how on college scholarships. My mother worked inconsistent jobs that paid low wages. My father had inconsistent income from his construction company. I had been working minimum wage jobs since I was fifteen. Even if I worked full-time after high school, my earnings as a server would not be enough to afford public university. I groveled to my local university’s scholarship office. They couldn’t do anything since I didn’t qualify to so much as apply for the university’s merit-based scholarships because I wasn’t in the top 10 percent of my high school. I spent my last semesters of high school desperately applying for scholarships, winning none.
Perhaps you’re like me: college wasn’t always the obvious next step. Unlike some students who had family legacies or expectations around higher ed, my path felt unclear. I just knew I wanted more for my future than my parents had. I wanted financial security, impactful career opportunities, and the chance to explore the world. College seemed like the way to make those dreams happen, even if I didn’t totally understand how yet.
The stats made college a clear choice, too - a degree doubles your odds of employment and nets over a million more dollars¹ over your lifetime.
So I decided to take a risk and invest in myself. I made it my goal to attend university. In order to do this I had to see myself as the start-up that I was founding.
After hours of googling universities, I realized that many universities’ tuition and board costs were more than what my family was making. So much for getting to experience dorm life and exploring a new city. I didn’t even bother asking my parents if we could afford these—most of their earnings went to housing and car repairs.
Flailing, underinformed, I picked the local university, which broke up the tuition and fees into an installment plan of small payments throughout the semester. I talked my father into taking turns with me on the payments.
In no time I felt like a mouse on a hamster wheel, struggling to get enough hours at my multiple jobs to keep up with payments, while also putting in the time to be an excellent student. I read online that to be considered a "top student" for scholarships, one needed extracurriculars as well as grades (both of which are essential to growth and success, something I discuss later).
I realized I had no chance of getting scholarships unless I found time to be a top student, and that without enough money, I was drowning trying to earn enough to pay tuition. I transferred to a community college, where tuition and fees were low enough to be covered by my automatic government grant (the Pell Grant), freeing up my time to dive deep into extracurriculars.
Throughout those next three semesters at community college, I optimized my day-to-day to turn myself into the exact kind of student that got big scholarships. I ended up receiving about $150,000 in scholarships for undergrad alone. (In my senior year, I was offered two $50,000+ scholarships at the same time. The extra money above the cost of university didn’t go to me, unfortunately.) What I did in those three semesters also helped me win a national fellowship in my junior year that paid for my master’s degree and boosted my résumé enough to get me into a school I thought I was crazy to even dream about: Yale. That national fellowship also landed me two paid internships: one in Washington, D.C., and one abroad. After my master’s, I went on to become a U.S. diplomat, serving in Senegal, Egypt, and Washington, D.C.
Back then, I couldn’t see how rare I was: a low-income student aiming for top universities, where the average student’s family income was over $200,000. My economic status actually helped me. I qualified for automatic scholarships, guaranteed entirely due to the rarity of being a low-income student accepted at those specific universities. A common word for people like me—and, perhaps, like you—is disadvantaged.
The word that I came to realize is more applicable is "unicorn."
This book is a step-by-step breakdown of what I did to get those big automatic scholarships, and later that fellowship…and how you can do it too. You can start this journey regardless of what year of high school you’re in, and even as a college freshman.
Select chapters will be helpful to students of all incomes, but students coming from families making less than $70,000 will derive the greatest benefit from this book. In these chapters, I’ll show you why it
