    Chapter 1:Amelia Smith

Give it back to me, I screamed at Daniel, who was running away with my ball. I couldn't stand this guy; he never listened to me.

I enjoy teasing you, Daniel shouted at me, still running away.

Daniel, please, I'm tired of running behind you, I screamed again but refused to give up.

What are you kids doing? one of the uncles asked us, looking up from his newspaper upon hearing our commotion.

Uncle, Daniel won't give my ball, I told him, pausing for a moment to catch my breath. I was exhausted from all the running, my heart racing, and struggling to breathe properly.

Stop playing and go back to your house. What if your father sees you? He'll be furious, the uncle advised, echoing what everyone always said about my father. But right then, I didn't care.

I resumed chasing Daniel, even though he was getting further ahead. I was running as fast as I could, and suddenly, I slipped and fell onto the road. Tears welled up as I noticed blood on my forehead. I continued to cry until Daniel reached me.

Amelia, are you okay? he asked, looking genuinely concerned.

I told you to stop, but you didn't. Look at my forehead; it's bleeding! I yelled, still mad at him.

I'm sorry, Amelia; I was just playing with you, he said, with a regretful expression. I knew he meant it, but I couldn't resist shouting at him.

You never care about me; you always make fun of me! I screamed, tears streaming down my face. Daniel bent down and pulled out a tissue paper from his pocket.

Let me clean your wound, he offered, slowly reaching for my forehead.

No, there's no need for that, I protested, pushing his hand away.

I'm really sorry, I promise I won't do this again. Here's your ball, Daniel said apologetically, handing it back to me. I took the ball from him with anger and stood up.

Should I take you home? he asked, but I glared at him with anger.

I don't need your help. You shouldn't talk to me anymore, I shouted at him and pushed him on his chest. He stepped back.

Amelia! somebody shouted my name angrily, and I turned to see Mr. Thomas standing there with an irate expression. He always seemed angry when around us, and I couldn't remember seeing him happy.

What are you doing? Why did you push him? he yelled at me, and I shivered with fear. I was terrified of him, and I realized I had made a big mistake by pushing Daniel in front of him. Mr. Thomas loved Daniel more than his own daughter.

I'm sorry, Dad, I mumbled, avoiding eye contact. I didn't have the courage to look into his eyes. I usually referred to him as Mr. Thomas behind his back, unable to accept that he was my father. I despised this man more than anyone I'd ever hated in my life.

I've told you thousands of times to be nice to Daniel, but you never seem to get it, just like your mother, he shouted at me, and I felt goosebumps all over my body. He was really angry, and I knew it was going to be one of those awful days.

Why can't you understand? he shouted again, and I shivered. I couldn't handle his loud voice anymore.

It's fine; we were just playing. It's not a serious matter, Daniel chimed
