About this ebook

With a poem for each week of the changing year, Between Two Pines invites you into the magical life. Created in a spirit of collaboration, Joanna Brook's richly descriptive poems lead you through garden and forest to creek, stone circle, and the cosmos of relationship.

"These poems invite you, Reader, to create and write poetry, too. They act as path, portal, mirror. There are poets inside each of us, and Joanna shapes (and then shares via the poem's speaker) a life through this impulse . . .  Joanna returns repeatedly to the altar of the creative process and, therefore, builds an altar of the poems themselves."

From the Introduction by Kate Belew

    Introduction

    Kate Belew

    Collaboration is a sacred process.

As I read these poems from Joanna’s work each week (and then again as a whole), I knew Joanna and I were making something together across the internet, time, and space. To see this collection made, a bound artifact is a blessing—an honor.

As you’ll read in Joanna’s preface, my weekly newsletter and poetry prompts were the threads from which this collection was woven. Joanna has created a path between two pines, an invitation, a hand reaching out in collaboration, inviting you to join us on this journey of being a human, listening to the earth, and the small moments that make up a lifetime, a year.

These poems invite you, Reader, to create and write poetry, too. They act as path, portal, mirror. There are poets inside each of us, and Joanna shapes (and then shares via the poem’s speaker) a life through this impulse, this ritual, a spell. Joanna returns repeatedly to the altar of the creative process and, therefore, builds an altar of the poems themselves.

There are fifty-two weeks in a year. There are 52 poems. There are so many ways through moments of possible creation, which are chosen carefully again and again. Joanna calls in the spirals, the seasons, horizons, speaking stones, and blossoming stories and makes an offering. Thank you for these poems, Joanna. Thank you for building an altar of possibility, for this sacred collaboration, as a reminder of that singing voice inside each Poet.

To the cycles and the seasons, may they bring the poems eternally.

    xo, Kate

    Preface

When walking through a forest, or even a suburban neighborhood in the Pacific Northwest, two trees framing the path call for a pause. Reach out a hand to either side; recognize the portal their trunks create. Cross the rooted threshold. Even if the other
