    1. THE NEW METAL DETECTOR

Just like any other 14-year-old, Charlie Robbins enjoyed adventure and excitement. He was a daring and energetic teen who loved to spend his free time exploring and searching for anything interesting.

He wasn’t too short or tall and seemed to blend in with the rest of his class. He would get on his bike and ride down the street. His short black hair slicked back and away from his forehead. He usually rode his bike to meet his best friend, Tommy Ketterman.

Together the boys would go to the beach after school to collect seashells or dig through the sand. Sometimes even bringing a football with them to make sure they didn’t get bored. Every single weekend though they would go down to the beach in order to fish. Always hoping for a larger catch than the weekend before.

The small town of Cumberton Cove has proven itself over and over again to be the perfect place for Charlie to be raised by his parents.

Right near the sea’s coast where there was no lack of fascination for the young teen.

The most interesting fact about their quaint small town was the namesake. Captain David Cumberton was a pirate from the 1600s that used to live in that very town. His precarious lifestyle led to his arrest and hanging in 1678. Famous for being a ruthless pirate that would kill people and steal their treasures. Most townspeople even believe that Captain Cumberton knew treasures were in the area and that was why he lived there for so long. Still, he was the most interesting thing that ever happened in the town, so criminal or not the town was eventually named after him. With his story being told all these years later.

Charlie and his family had only moved to Cumberton Cove three years ago when he was 12. They settled into a two-story beach house on the northwest side of town. During the warmer summer months, the town was flooded with tourists enjoying the seashore and the warmth of the sand on their bodies. Charlie’s family loved having an ocean view right from their living room. Especially since Charlie’s father, Ted, Was a professional diver and treasure hunter. Meanwhile his mother, Rylie, was a teller at the Cumberton State Bank in town.

One sunny Saturday morning in the spring Charlie was with his mom running errands in town. They went into Captain Dave’s Sporting Goods. Rylie had a large shopping list of things she needed to get, mostly for Ted. She also needed a bunch of new gardening equipment for herself, and Charlie was bored right away. He wandered off to look at the huge variety of equipment in the cases. Things for football, camping, and new fishing gear. The usual things he would look at when in the store.

The shine of the new glass showcase drew Charlie’s attention. He stopped suddenly when he spied a metal detector sitting inside of it. He ran his fingers across the top of the smooth glass of the showcase, freezing right above the metal detector. Sitting on a dark red stand and almost glowing from the metal shine. Charlie had been thinking of getting a metal detector for a while after hearing tales of the amazing treasure he could get from it. He dreamt of actually finding something special and unique hidden right under the ground or the sand at the beach.

Charlie asked the salesclerk to take it out from the showcase. He had saved up enough birthday money to be able to just barely afford it. Charlie turned and saw his mom grin slightly and nod her head in approval of his purchase. He paid for the metal detector and was eager to get home with it. He wanted to try it out as quickly as possible to see if he could find hidden treasure.

After what felt like hours Rylie and Charlie pulled back into the driveway of their home. Charlie bolted out of the car and through the front door of the house. Heading to his room and calling Tommy, who was enthralled with the idea of the new gadget and was quite eager to come to Charlie’s house and see it for himself. He told Charlie to get ready for the beach and he would be over
