Curse Of The Devils Gold - Robert Hooney Mahaney

    Chapter One

    Curse of The Devil’s Gold

Mindoro Island, the Philippines, fall 1942, the Japanese are everywhere and nowhere, I have no idea. I’m hunkered down here in the underbrush, miles from my carrier with no hope of immediate help.

I had a couple zero’s come in from the clouds at 11 o’clock and they had me nailed before I could say Cock Robin. A lucky shot caught my manifold and flames shot everywhere. I knew I was going down and had to get out so I pulled the eject lever. The next thing I knew I was floating toward things I didn’t want to know about, for I had no idea whether I was in safe territory or in big trouble. I knew there were a lot of friendly Philippinos on this island, but there could also be a lot of the enemy. One of the Zero’s started toward me with the intention of blasting me out of the air when out of nowhere an American Dauntless plane spotted them and his gunner saved my can. While they were fighting I landed and found a quasi safe spot and watched the dog fight. I noticed that only one of the Japanese planes was into the fight and the other plane was just milling around. Somehow the gunnie in the Dauntless managed to hit the miller and it looked like it was on it’s way down. Whoa! That plane is coming down OK, but the damned thing is coming straight toward me. How does he know I’m here? It crashes not a hundred yards from me and covers the whole area with metal cartons and something shiny that looks like colored metal flying everywhere. That plane must have been just about out of fuel because it didn’t burst into flames. I later learned that they had less gas so they could carry more gold. Then they had put that extra gas in the escort plane in case he got into a dog
