Award-winning author Beth A. Freely was born and raised in upstate New York, with a brief and very influential stint living in Great Britain that can be seen in her writing.     Italy, Present Day

    Eleanor sat on the small porch overlooking the Tuscan countryside listening to the birds in the trees singing merrily under the noonday sun. She had set her laptop aside to enjoy a fragrant cup of coffee in the sunshine yellow mug her husband had given her all those years ago. The cup was warm, the coffee strong and dark, the rich smell of the brew wafting to her nose on the steam. She had been tempted to go into Florence with him that morning, but she decided to enjoy the warm weather and sunshine while she worked on her lesson plans for the following school year. She lifted the mug to her lips, gently blowing on the hot coffee before taking a sip.

    She set the cup down on the small garden table as her daughter came out of the house holding a book. It was a thick book, bound with ribbons and sporting a half-inch layer of dust. She looked at the book, reaching out to take it from her daughter. She laughed as she ran her finger through the dust that ensconced the front cover. She took the towel lying on the table next to the remains of her lunch and dusted the book off. Where did you find this? Eleanor asked in an amused voice.

    It was under the old couch. I saw the ribbons sticking out from one of the ruffles. I had to crawl on the floor to pull it out. And move some dust bunnies to get to it. Really mother, when are you going to get rid of that old thing? Francesca asked as she sat down.

    The couch or this book? Eleanor winked at her daughter.

    That decrepit old couch. I’m pretty sure it went out of style in the 1970s.
