    Dinoalya - Kay R.J

    Chapter 1

When you have a secret even you don’t know

They say the dinosaurs went extinct sixty-five million years ago and that man never lived amongst them. Well whoever they were ... they were wrong.

Before the asteroid hit the earth, the dinosaurs migrated to an island in the middle of the atlantic ocean, a land that was safe from the many natural disasters caused by the impact of the cosmic hit. The creatures praised the Dragon Gods for allowing the survival of as many species as possible, some dinosaurs sadly did not make it to this sanctuary, lost in the volcanic bursts, earthquakes, floods and other horrors.

After mourning the victims with great sorrow, those who did survive named their safe haven: Dinoalya.

After millions of years the dinosaurs had a new species to share their island with. Humans.

In this time a whole grand city of humans is hiding on Dinoalya.

Now, occasionally, as man and dinosaur have always seen eye to eye, dinosaurs and humans have fallen in love with each other and eventually the Dragon Gods would bless them with children.

These gifts from the Dragon’s are known as Dino-men, and have far superior gifts.

There are thousands of Dino-men all over the world right under your nose. Who knows? You might even be one and not know it!

    Like this girl ...

Vina. A twelve year old girl being raised in The Blackpool Orphanage for Unfortunate Angels.

You would think Blackpool’s a great place to live, but not when you’re that one child in town who just doesn’t fit in at all. Vina spends her time studying, prehistory being her favourite subject. But unfortunately every other girl in the orphanage likes boy bands and looking pretty, whilst all the boys like sports and girls who look pretty. So to everyone else, Vina is a dino-geek.

Her face screamed of intelligence. Her chin, nose and her hazel eyes were in perfect proportions of size to each other. She had mostly dark brown hair but with one streak of blonde coming out from above her right temple. Not dyed, Vina wasn’t that type of girl, she’d had that streak ever since she could remember, it was like an odd birthmark to her, that’s what she liked to call it.

Her cheeks were flat and her mouth was fairly small. Her voice was like a computer which had three settings. The most used was quiet and afraid, the second setting was speaking softly. But when asked a question at school the third setting would automatically turn to the voice that sounded like it belonged to a young professor. This voice was always correct and didn’t stop to think about what it was saying, not that it ever had to.

Vina often sits in her room reading unless a member of the orphanage staff said she needed some fresh air. Then she would leave and happily run around the woods down the street. But today she wouldn’t dare do either. Yesterday the oldest, toughest, moodiest kids in the orphanage followed their dino-geek to the woods and ... well she wouldn’t want me to finish the details.

So today she sat crouched down against the wall inside her room getting funny looks from the skipping girls and card gaming boys in the garden, and occasionally getting scrunched up paper and sweet packets thrown at her window.

But there were two members of the orphanage staff who would not let Vina stay locked up in her misery.

    Cody Vorous and Zoe Paleo.

The young couple started working there when Vina was nine. Though their job was to watch over all the children, Vina was their top priority for reasons she couldn’t guess. Sometimes Vina thought they were training to be councillors and that she was their practice dummy.

He-hey sweety, Cody greeted Vina as he sat down next to her in his eternally confident voice, like a noble knight of the round table. Not coming outside?

Cody was a fine, strapping, young fella, with naturally tanned skin and brown bristles for hair and bandages around both his forearms. It was lucky that those bandages weren’t around his feet as, like Vina, Cody had a passion for running and loved all sorts of sports. He had many memories of running races with Vina along the beaches of Blackpool.

Rumour had it that Cody used to be in the forces and nearly had his hands blown off in a secret mission, that’s where he got his bandages from. With his athletic appearance and heroic voice, the eyes of a child could have easily pictured that image in their head, but Vina was not one for urban legends.

    No way, Vina moped.

Aww come on Vina, Zoe smiled as she entered the room. Her voice morphed and changed at Zoe’s command. At times she would go from tomboy-like to sassy to friendly. Her unpredictable attitude was one of the reasons that Cody fell in love with her. Not every day is black in Blackpool. Everyday is a day for the pool in Blackpool.

Zoe was also a fit and healthy girl like her dear Cody. She had a heart of gold, a mind of silver and a soul of bronze.

Her hair was sun blonde with a bright pink stripe through the centre and tied up in the most perfect ponytail.

If I go out alone, they’ll beat me up, if I go out with you guys they’ll beat me up when you’re not looking.

You don’t know that, Cody smirked.

I do, Vina said firmly. Because all the girls are crushing on Cody so they’ll kill me out of jealousy.

Really? The two carers said in two completely different tones.

After Cody got an annoyed look off Zoe, to change the subject he asked, How about a forever race?

Vina gave a tiny smile and said, Okay. She knew a forever race meant no one would see her.

A forever race was basically seeing how long two competitors could run for without getting tired. Whoever stops for breath first is the loser.

Quickly the three of them dashed to the edge of the street at the entrance to the orphanage.

Knowing she wouldn’t be able to keep up with Vina and Cody. Zoe kissed Cody goodbye and tickled Vina on the chin at the same time.

Vina had never understood why Cody and Zoe had taken such an interest in her. But since the day she met them Vina felt that she wasn’t a hundred percent alone in the world.

Vina sometimes felt that she existed only to be with them; with Cody’s love of running and Zoe’s big brain, just like Vinas.

Only on the worst of days and after sleepless nights, Vina would occasionally think about asking Zoe and Cody to take her home with them, adopting her. But she was so afraid of them saying no.

    Zoe counted the race down.

Three, two, one, GO GO GO!

And in the blink of an eye the two of them were gone. RUN MY DEARIES! She shouted after them happily.

Whenever Vina ran her mind emptied and soothed. As if she was in a running meditation. The wind in her face felt like a wet flannel scrubbing her clean of sadness and other negative feelings.

The blur of her surroundings zooming past her seemed like a living masterpiece with its hundreds of colours turning themselves into paint brush strokes.

There was only gain and no pain as Vina and Cody were extremely light footed. It almost seemed that their feet were blister proof!

When Vina smiled and forgot about all her troubles, Cody grinned with relief and carried on pumping his clenched fists backwards and forwards as his feet copied. Hours passed by as did the world as the two friends ran all the way from the orphanage to the pleasure beach itself and back.

Once the racers reached the orphanage and the race was over, Zoe was there applauding the winner, Vina.

Ahhh, Cody huffed and puffed. Looks like I’m losing speed in my old age.

    Vina laughed at his words.

And to the victor, goes the prize, Zoe then handed Vina a Crunchie bar. honey comb, her favourite sweet.

Yes!!! Vina grinned holding the bar of deliciousness. Thanks Zoe!

Don’t let the head of house see it, you know how she is about you kids watching your weight, Zoe smiled at her.

Speaking of which, we’d better get ready for dinner, Cody said to his sweetheart.

Yeah you’re right, Zoe nodded. We’ll see you in a bit Hun.

Thank you guys, Vina said in her most grateful voice. For everything.

As they left Vina sighed. Why wouldn’t they take her home with them? She knew she can’t just ask someone to take them in as their daughter. But she couldn’t bear it here much longer. Vina shook her head to shake off these irresponsible thoughts and planned to walk back to her room. Little did she know there were hunting eyes on her, predators were stalking prey.

Vina unwrapped the chocolate and took a single bite. Sweet crispy, crunchy heaven.

That heaven was then broken as a fist hit her in the stomach, causing her to vomit her treat back up. A kick then had Vina on the ground, the chocolate hanging loosely in her hand.

Enjoying yourself? Dino-geek? came a smug voice.

Catherine? Vina wheezed. She looked up to see the oldest and meanest girl in the orphanage, accompanied by the oldest boy. He was large and strong, she was slender and pretty, her long hazelnut hair bounced as she waved her hand through it.

What, you didn’t beat me up enough yesterday? Vina asked them.

Are you talking back to me? Catherine asked aggressively as she stood on Vinas wrist with the heel of her high heels. Ahhhh! Vina screamed. She knew a heel like that could cause some damage. A not so fun fact she knew is that it’s more dangerous being stepped on by a high-heel than being stepped on by an elephant.

Catherine picked up Vinas Crunchie and waved it teasingly in Vinas face. So not only are you a total nerd, you’re a fat little piggy too!

She threw it away and more bad kids appeared from the shadows and stomped on it. Crushing it to golden sugary dust. The sight almost brought Vina to tears (but her eyes were already busy crying at the pain on her wrist). Why? She asked.

Why? Catherine copied. Because you look happy, Vina.

And when you’re happy, none of us are, the strong boy said.

And you know what our dear carer says, another girl smirked. A beautiful smile is the first step towards adoption.

And everyone knows you’re never getting adopted, Vina, a boy told her.

That’s a fact, another boy agreed.

So why would you make us frown like this? Do you not want us to get adopted? another girl asked her.

That’s just plain selfish, a girl said.

What a jerk you are, another girl agreed.

Only when you’re miserable are we all happy, Catherine stated.

Can I go now? Vina wept.

Nope, Catherine replied. There’s something else we need to settle. Stop spending so much time with Zoe and Cody, you’re taking their attention off of us and we poor unfortunate little orphan girls deserve the attention of a manly ex-spy super man like Cody.

Same goes for us and having a hot babe like Zoe watch us, the deep voiced lad added to that.

You’re being selfish yet again Vina, everyone knows they only fake interest in you because they get paid to, another girl said right in Vina’s ear.

    That’s ... not ... true ...  Vina cried in a stutter.

Oh yes it is! Catherine stated. Who would ever want to be around you voluntarily?

Vina received another kick in the stomach as Catherine grunted. You’re pathetic!

You’re ugly! a boy joined in, also kicking Vina.

    You’re selfish! A girl kicked.

    You’re weird! a boy kicked.

Vina was dribbled like a football as she was knocked around by shoes and hurtful words. You’re a freak! You’re a mistake! You’re nothing!

Alright stop! Catherine held her hands out to her friends. Enough kicking it’s time to get real! We wanna punish her for existing right?

The group cheered like a military squad going into battle. The skip! the strong boy called. The others cheered in agreement.

Vina was picked up aggressively before being carried to the rubbish bins and big green skips out back next to a dying tree. Each of the monsters called out suggestions on how to torture Vina and they all sounded like good ideas.

First they poured out all the rubbish onto her, rubbing it into her face, making sure some of it went in her mouth. Next they lifted the round metal bins over their heads and thrusted them downwards, slamming them onto Vinas’ front. The sudden jolt on her stomach caused Vina to swallow what felt like a scrunched up crisp packet. Of course her body rejected it and she started choking. It was a nice break from the beating as the predators laughed at her as she wretched on her hands and knees before them.

The beating continued but this time with a tree branch, the dry, dead leaves and twig ends felt like needles. Thankfully the repeated lashes on the back helped Vina vomit out the crisp packet.

Vina gasped for air and rasped like a pug. Thankful that they hadn’t killed her yet.

Looky what I found! Catherine called out.

The group parted to find their beautiful leader, she had one hand on her hip on a sassy pose, and in her other hand lay a red brick.

You’ll die in the trash like the Rat you are, Dino-geek.

This was a beating like Vina had never had before. She had thrown up her food,
