- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5This book is so much fun! I love it! It’s similar to Harry Potter and a great MG read. It’s so enjoyable, a quick, light read and the music is fun. If you haven’t read this, you should definitely check it out.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5This was a wonderful book. I love that the Audible book had music playing throughout it. I hope that the author writes more stories to go with this one. She defiantly left the ending open for more stories.
I think the characters are all likeable. The story moves along nicely. I loved the interaction between Amelia and her best friend. It is a book that is written in the mind set of a 7th grader. It is about learning to be yourself and trying not to be anyone else, but you. - Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Really cool story with a mystery I didn’t figure out before it was revealed. I also love that this audible original contained music from the NJSO Youth Orchestras. That was a nice touch!
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5This was a fun read, similar to the Harry Potter series.I listened to the audiobook version and found the music a great addition to this book. Sometimes I felt as if I were there in this magical fictional world, because the music drew me in. This book made me want to play music, because sometimes music truly can be magical, although not quite like depicted in this book.If only we all could find our talents so early on in life.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Series Info/Source: Stand Alone book, free Audible Original with Audible membership.Audiobook Quality (4/5): The audiobook was very well done and I really enjoyed the narration. This is one of the better Audible Originals audiobooks I have listened to.Story (4/5): I really enjoyed the way music was used to perform magic in this book. I also loved how Amelia was so determined to make things work when she gets into school, even though she’s put into a very difficult situation. This was a very entertaining story with some positive messages around friendship and family. I was a bit worried that this was going to be a musical Harry Potter, but this book stands separate from that pretty well. This was definitely lighter than Harry Potter and just a lot different in many ways. Characters (4/5): I really enjoyed most of the characters in this book. Amelia is admirable because of her determination to succeed...however, I did get sick of her constant self deprecation and wavering confidence. I really enjoyed Jai, he was funny and confident and a loyal and steadfast friend to Amelia. Some of the surrounding characters are more of your typical “mean kids”.Setting (3/5): The setting could have been filled out a bit more. The majority of the story takes place at the Mystwick school. The setting seems to be modern day but with musical magic around. I felt like both the school and the description of the world could have been more detailed, I had trouble picturing the setting at points. Writing Style (4/5): The writing flowed well and the dialogue was witty and fun. Pacing was good and the story moves at a good clip. I really have no complaints about the writing.Summary (4/5): Overall this was a fun fantasy read about a middle grade girl trying to realize her dreams at a magical music school. It was entertaining and I enjoyed it. It was a nice light fantasy read that I think both adults and kids can enjoy. If Khoury writes any follow-up books in this world I plan on picking them up to read.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5This story takes place in a world where music creates magic. The entire world has music magic but only the best musicians can do higher level magic. Amelia Jones has always wanted to go to the Mystwick School of Magic. Her late mother went to school there. Amelia does horribly at her audition. Surprisingly, she receives an invitation to attend. When she arrives at the school she realizes something is wrong. There was another Amelia Jones, who was an amazing musician and who died just as acceptances are sent out. That Amelia Jones' letter magically traveled to this Amelia Jones. The Deans of the school decide she can be admitted on a trial basis. Amelia does her best to reach the skill level of the other students and keep out of trouble. However; someone is sabotaging her work and waking her repeatedly throughout the night. Who is it - students who discovered her secret, the other Amelia's friends, or the ghost of Amelia Jones? I listened to this on audiobook because it was free through Audible. The story was cute, the mystery was good - and scary- , but the best part was the music. The music is performed by members of the NJSO Youth Orchestras and includes well known and original compositions.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5This is a delightful story, absolutely a gem for young adults (of which I am not anymore;) Loved the story, the musical/magical theme and the narration. It makes me realize how much music IS magic. I am not musical talented but I sure wish I was after listening to this book. Highly recommended for a fun fantastical romp. Well done by all involved.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Sometimes you find a gem with the monthly free titles from Audible. The Mystwick School of Musicraft by Jessica Khoury is one of these gems. I went in expecting a musical Harry Potter and got so much more. The story is absolutely charming, told with a lot of heart and has a strong message about believing in yourself. Here's the official blurb:Amelia Jones has always dreamed of attending the Mystwick School of Musicraft, where the world’s most promising musicians learn to create musical magic. Unfortunately, Amelia botches her audition and her dream comes crashing down—until the school agrees to give her a second chance. Amelia vows to do whatever it takes to make her dream come true.Initially it was hard not make Harry Potter comparisons. Thankfully Mystwick is vastly different from Hogwarts so my brain was able to stop comparing them fairly early on and I was able to absorb myself into this magical, musical world. Amelia is highly likeable and relatable. Her aspiration to attend Mystwick as a way to connect with her late mother definitely tugs at the heartstrings. She also has some growing to do, as both a musician and a person, and I think people of all ages will be able to identify with Amelia's feelings of inadequacy and self doubt as she learns to believe in herself. There is a fun cast of supporting characters, especially Jai Kapoor, with plenty of entertaining magical hi-jinks and mischief for the kids to get into.I listened to the audio book narrated by Suzy Jackson and with musical performances by the NJSO Youth Orchestra. The music blends seamlessly in with the story making for a unique and magical listening experience. There were times I rewound the audio just so I could listen to the musical portion a second time. I highly recommend it!Here's hoping that there will eventually be a sequel.
