    About Gopu Shrestha

When my children were young, my wife and I moved our family from our home in Nepal to the United States. All I knew of American culture came to me through movies, books, and what I saw on television. I wondered what a different life my children would have here and if this huge shift would change who they were as natives of Nepal. When you grow up in a certain culture, you want your children to experience it too. You want to have a shared cultural history with them. However, realizing we wouldn’t have this didn’t change how much I wanted my sons to have better lives. I was driven to make sure they wouldn’t grow up in poverty as I had. I believed America was the answer.

What I discovered was that young people who are starting their careers have the same moral decisions to make regardless of culture or country. You will still have to decide whether you will ground yourself in integrity, compassion, and collaboration—or be motivated to win at all costs, no matter who else gets hurt. Will you recognize that long-term success requires holding onto the bigger picture of a life well-lived, or will you go for the short-term win and put your reputation in jeopardy? Success in business requires a reputable brand that cultivates customer loyalty. If a business owner mistreats employees for a higher profit, provides poor customer service, or creates products that are inferior, it’s inevitable that the word will get out. Remember this: ultimately, the honest person builds a reputation on honesty. Cheaters may seem to grow rich, but eventually the truth comes to light, and the brand suffers.

Moral behavior is defined differently by different cultures. It’s usually shaped by religious influence, historical conflict between people groups, prejudices, and a host of other factors. However, there are truths that guide all human beings. We know when we’re taking advantage of other people and when we are being compassionate and fair. A lie is a lie in all cultures, no matter how many ways we might try to justify our deception. Whether you believe in karma or that you will reap what you sow, nearly all of us recognize that there are consequences to our choices. We are the ones who, over the years, either build trust or undermine it. How we behave defines who we are. People come to know who we really are—no matter how we might pretend to be someone else.

Those of us who have immigrated to the United States face similar challenges as we make the transition from another country and culture. But those who are born and raised here are confronted with the same choices. All young people, regardless of culture of origin, must decide what kind of adult they will be. My message is to everyone—younger or older, no matter where we live or how we were raised.

Regardless of whether you are new to America or if your ancestors have lived here for generations, this book is for you if you are determining what you want out of life. Are you interested in creating a fulfilling life for yourself that will lead to good relationships, a positive attitude, and freedom from fear and ruin? My experiences and insight will help you weigh the costs of your choices.

How do I know that the principles in this book are solid? I live it. I now own a five thousand square foot home in Kathmandu, the capital of Nepal. Additionally, I support three households in the United States. I have three master’s degrees (MBA, MS Management, MS Software Engineering) and have been an IT consultant for large corporations including the Mayo Clinic, Prime Therapeutics, Jackson Life Insurance Company (a subsidiary of Blue Cross Blue Shield), the state of Utah, Wells Fargo Bank, and other state and federal governments.

In these pages, you will also find keys to financial understanding. These will help you make an income —not only to live comfortably, but also to help those around you. If you want true life satisfaction, then this book will help you create wealth through integrity. Who you choose to be determines what type of person you become.

It is very easy to throw ideas at a problem, hoping they will magically fix it. But ideas—even the greatest ones— won’t make a difference until they are turned into action. I am certain this strategy will work for you because it
